With a $39 billion company backing her, is Angel Reese the future face of women's basketball?

For Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese, taking over the WNBA has been pretty easy. From her intense rivalry with rookie Caitlin Clark to her eye-catching fashion, she’s excelling both on and off the court. Meanwhile, her standout achievement remains her endorsement deals since she was selected as the No. 7 pick in the WNBA draft last April. “God, thank you!” she said in a statement. Now, bouncing back from the worrisome Chicago Sky’s Tuesday update, she’s just adding more to her illustrious record with a little twist.

On August 28th, Reese took to her official X account to announce that her Reese’s X Angel jerseys are out for sale. “Reese’s Pieces, are you ready for drop 2?! Shop my Reese’s X Angel jerseys out now on http://TheAngelReese.com,” she wrote. This is the second big revelation after Reese’s deal with Reese’s and Hershey’s.

However, the partnership isn’t just limited to jerseys. It also includes Reese’s-themed apparel such as tees, hoodies, hats, and even candies. The “Chi-Town Barbie” has signed “nearly two dozen companies” for endorsement deals since the beginning of her collegiate career, but a contract with a $39 million company has been in the works for quite some time.

Now that the 22-year-old Maryland native has achieved what she’s been aiming for, she’s ready to give something back—not the deal, but a special surprise for all her fans. “If you’re coming to the game tomorrow night, I have a special surprise for you all.” The secret will be revealed at the upcoming matchup against the Washington Mystics on August 29th. But, is Angel Reese enticing fans to fill the arenas?

Reese’ on the way to rescue

It might be true. Even though Angel Reese stands toe-to-toe with Caitlin Clark, her team is in a challenging situation. In the last five games, the Chicago Sky has secured only one win, making the upcoming game against the Washington Mystics crucial.

In the past two games, both teams have split the wins. However, it seems Chicago Sky might be at a disadvantage against the Mystics, considering a few players were feeling sick on Tuesday morning, which led to the practice session being cancelled. According to GM Jeff Pagliocca, COVID-19 tests were also initiated.

Players were spotted wearing masks at Sachs Recreation Center on doctors’ advice. While Reese is set to play the game, Chennedy Carter, the team’s leading scorer, is out. “Sky IR: Chennedy Carter OUT, health and safety protocols,” wrote a Sun-Times reporter on X. Now the game will rely on defensive play, with Reese (13.5 PPG, 12.9 RPG) and Lindsay Allen (6.1 PPG, 3.6 APG) leading the charge.

Most likely fans would consider missing out on the game due to Sky’s injury updates. To tackle this issue, it seems Reese is attracting fans with a special surprise.
