Kelsey Plum was born in Poway. Her ancestors are of Caucasian heritage. Katie, her mother, was a talented volleyball player at the University of California. Her father, Jim, was an All-American football player in high school in La Mesa, California, and he also played college baseball and football at San Diego State. Plum has a younger brother and two older sisters. Like their mother, both of her sisters were volleyball players. Kaitlyn, their oldest sister, was a UC Davis athlete. Lauren, the middle sister, played setter for the Oregon Ducks and was named an honorable mention All-American and an All-Pac-12 selection. Lauren also played a big part in the Junior National Team of USA Volleyball’s best-ever performance in the World Junior Championships, finishing in fourth place.
