A'ja Wilson shutting down the Belgium crowd—Is she the most clutch player in women's basketball today?

It seems like Team USA has only one caption that defines them the best– At the end of the day, the dynasty keeps rising. Since their 1992 stint, the National women’s basketball team has brought back gold every time. Tonight, Team USA won their 57th straight win in the quadrennial event. Hence, when a close game like Belgium strikes, it becomes much more than a shocker. It becomes a lesson. Something that A’ja Wilson and Co. would surely not take for granted. But one thing that Team USA certainly can do is prove people wrong. Something they did yet again with Sabrina Ionescu making the final shot.

In her postgame press conference, the 2x Olympian A’ja Wilson commented on Sabrina Ionescu’s “the silencer” act and what this victory meant. She said, “You just want to go out there and play your best game. And I think we did that.” Wilson further added, “I think on the defensive end, it was a great showing, and I love when the crowd goes against us. I feel like that is a beautiful thing about our game is playing in those atmospheres and proving people wrong. Wanting to hush the crowd a little bit. So, I’m glad we were able to execute that.”

Team USA edged over the “aggressive” Belgian Cats with 48-28 rebounds. This showcased their strength not only in offense but also on the defensive glass. But it was not tonight’s display from the USA, who gave up 15 turnovers, which boosted Belgium’s confidence. Back in February, Team USA trailed the opponents by as much as 13 points by halftime in the Olympic qualifying tournament. Then too, it was Breanna Stewart’s last shot that brought the team a 1-point win.

Sabrina Ionescu did something similar tonight.

The 3x WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson may have been rocking the boat for competitors through her double-trouble mentality. So has Breanna Stewart. But since Sabrina Ionescu has not made a mark in that position yet, she finds another way to elevate her team. Tonight, her last shot, which came in just 4 seconds before the game clock ran out, gave Team USA an extended win of 87-74. But what caught everyone’s eyes was her shushing the crowd.

Have an interesting take?

As soon as the Liberty star connected her final deep shot, the Belgian crowd turned up the booing roars. Certainly, Belgium does have a huge fan base, especially with their country sharing borders with France. While not many people liked what Sab did, some, including A’ja Wilson, knew that it had to be done. The two capped the 57th consecutive win for the USA with a combined total of 29 points.

Team USA has already qualified for the quarterfinals. For the knockout rounds, they will be soon traveling to Accor Arena in Paris. The games will only get more intense as the competition gets hotter for A’ja Wilson and Co. Certainly, it will be worthwhile to catch history in the making as Team USA goes for its tenth Olympic gold medal.
