For the enthusiastic WNBA fans, Monday afternoon proved to be an absolute delight. Some confidence booster for Team USA on their quest for another historic Olympics as they took down their 2020 Gold Medal game opponents, Japan, in a clinical exhibition. And who better to script such an authoritative performance than their 2 stalwarts? Joining forces by keeping their league rivalry aside, A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart provided just a glimpse of what they are capable of together.
Following this, the 2x Olympian Stewart reflected on being a partner in crime alongside the other MVP candidate Wilson. “It’s amazing to play with A’ja. Her and I are just continuing to create this two-woman tandem on the court — looking for each other, running the floor and really making it difficult for the other team,” Stewart said as per ESPN.
The game turned out to be a display of both their skills. While Stewart capped off the fixture with 22 points and 8 rebounds, it was a double-double affair for her counterpart A’ja Wilson (24 points, 13 rebounds). Both going toe to toe against one another has been the highlight of the previous few WNBA seasons. Especially when it comes to giving shape to the MVP race.

Stewart grabbed the honors in 2018 with the Seattle Storm, and Wilson won it two years later. And again in 2022. Then, just last season, after a neck-to-neck battle between the two, the 29-year Stewart edged passed her competitor, eventually. Although, Wilson finished her campaign with the Finals MVP.
A’ja Wilson also spared a thought or two in this regard. She expressed, “So we had to come out and establish ourselves at an all-time high just on the stage that we’re on. I think we had a good showing at that.” In the meantime, Breanna Stewart had an exclusive list that didn’t include Wilson.

In an interesting turn of events, the Liberty’s dynamic No.30 opened up about her dream starting line-up. Surprisingly, there isn’t a mention of one of her Olympic teammates. She said, “Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Me and… Lisa Leslie.” Four of these stars are alumni of the 11x national champion UConn. The remaining one, Lisa Leslie, was a standout center for the Trojans from 1990 to 1994.

The equation between the 2 phenomenal athletes seems to be benefitting the team for the time being. But hardly anyone would argue that whether they are playing on the same side or at opposite ends, they have the ability to utilize their skills to the best. It will be interesting to see what results their chemistry brings for Team USA.
