Is Coach Reeve right to blame the players, or should she shoulder some responsibility too?

The Minnesota Lynx, after winning Game 1 in an astounding fashion, lost Game 2 with the same grandeur manner. This time, too, the Liberty led, but only with 8 points in the fourth quarter. Now a team that covered an 18-point lead to turn the tables, just 2 days ago, was expected to do the same in this situation. However, despite their valor attempts, the Lynx lost by an 80-66 margin, which led their head coach Cheryl Reeve to blame the players.

“”Our offense was bad at a time we really needed it,” on being shutout in the final 3 minutes of the game. The coach added she’s “more than disappointed, I’m pissed” at how the team allowed the Liberty to go up 17 again,” shared Alexa Philippou while quoting Reeve from her post-game press conference on Sunday.

As mentioned before the final quarter started with a 53-61 tally in the Liberty’s favor. The Lynx committed fouls and also missed a lot of opportunities to make layups and jump shots. All of this culminated, in the Lynx losing by an 80-66 margin. For this poor display, fans immediately blamed Courtney Williams.

It is to be noted that the Lynx trailed by only two points with 3:40 minutes left. However, from that time onwards, Breanna Stewart & Co. did not allow the Liberty to score any points, while they kept on extending their lead. This loss therefore would have hurt Reeve more since the Lynx could have won it, had they been more aggressive with their game. However, after expressing her anger, Reeve also reflected on the coming game.

Many fans also opined that Williams missing her shots was a reason since she took a lot of time aiming and dribbling the ball, but couldn’t make anything off it. Plus, despite being the better defense team between the two and also having a DPOY Napheesa Collier, they couldn’t stop the Liberty in their tracks and kept on conceding points.

Have an interesting take?

“We’ve got to come up with better opportunities and better things that we can do offensively so we can get back to it, or a little bit more of a balanced scoring,” Reeve stated. Game 3 will take place on Wednesday and Reeve needs to make sure that the team does better offensively. The Liberty had the best offensive ratings in the regular season and they are backing it up playing a similar game.

But despite losing the matchup, there is hope for the Lynx since they are the only team to have defeated Stewart & Co. during the regular season by a 2-1 margin in the series. And hopefully, they will bounce back in the next game.
