It was a game to remember. Fresh off a gold medal victory in the Summer Olympics, Brittney Griner carried on the winning momentum yesterday. The Phoenix Mercury demolished Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky 85-65 on the opponent’s home court, with Griner shining a little extra. Having scripted history for the franchise, the 33-year-old has another record-breaking veteran by her side in Diana Taurasi. The question is, will the two come back tonight vs. the Indiana Fever?
Mercury’s guard/forward Rebecca Allen is already out of the game because she reportedly sustained a right hamstring injury during an exhibition game with the Australian Opals at the end of July. With Taurasi already going through an injury scare in Paris, what does tonight’s future hold?
Will Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi miss another game vs. Indiana Fever?

Griner was at the top of her game yesterday against a rusty Sky, coming back after a month-long break for the Olympics. With 20+ points, 5+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and 5+ blocks in a single game, the Mercury superstar became the only player to boast such numbers for the team. Taurasi, on the other hand, faced some trouble from Reese in the second quarter. Although the Sky were running behind with a 22-point deficit at half-time, the former LSU player made her presence known.
But despite both teams’ numbers not faring well this season, it was the Mercury that emerged victorious with a wide gap. Next up, the team will take on Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever, but can we expect Taurasi and Griner to be among the five on the court? In the nerve-wracking Olympic final against France last week, Taurasi missed the third game and was instead found on the bench for the whole duration. While no reports confirmed an injury or even fatigue, rumors ran wild.
Additionally, Griner missed a previous game against Indiana on July 12, as did Taurasi. While Griner had been sidelined owing to a hip injury, Taurasi’s case was more serious. She missed three consecutive games due to a left leg injury, and with her and Griner missing, the Mercury had lost to the Fever.
But it has been close to four weeks now, both players have recovered and are on an Olympic gold high. To make things slightly easier, Temi Fagbenle will not play for Indiana tonight owing to a right thumb injury.

What’s your perspective on:
Are Taurasi and Griner the heart and soul of Phoenix Mercury, even when battling injuries?
Have an interesting take?
While the Fever enters the second half of the season on an 11-15 record, the Mercury seems to be doing better with a solid 14-12. Like their previous outing, can the Phoenix team beat another team on their home court? After the Olympic break, Sky’s defeat was certainly a fan-bashing worthy game. Nevertheless, Chicago’s rookie sensation is on fire.
Brittney Griner scripted history but so did Angel Reese
In yesterday’s clash of legends, Wintrust Arena was full of jaw-dropping moments. Taurasi was coming off a record-breaking 6th Olympic gold medal while Griner made franchise history. But, what Angel Reese did was commendable as she became the first-ever WNBA player to secure 300 or more rebounds in their first 25 games. However, she was not done and even surpassed what only three other WNBA players have done.
She recorded her 18th double-double of the season with 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting and 15 rebounds, thereby, outclassing former Sacramento Monarchs player Yolanda Griffith and Los Angeles Sparks legend Candace Parker, both of whom have 17 double-doubles. The only one standing in the former LSU player’s way to the top is Atlanta Dream forward Tina Charles, who has 4 more double-doubles than Reese at 22.
