Should WNBA fines be reconsidered given the players' earnings? A'ja Wilson's reaction says it all!

“I’m the loud outspoken one and Lish is the quiet reasonable one,” A’ja Wilson had once opined of a certain Atlanta Dream star. From their time with the South Carolina Gamecocks to representing their teams in the WNBA, the two stars have been together through thick and thin. And now when the two have established their own brand in the W, they can be seen joking with each other and pulling each other’s leg. In one such incident, Wilson on Monday refused to pay the fine for her friend, ex-teammate and current rival.

“@_ajawilson22 hey Twin, you tryna pay my fine 😂 we both got T’d up on the same day 😂😂😂😂,” Allisha Gray exclaimed on Monday on her social media networking site X. To which Wilson responded in a humorous way enumerating, “YOU NEED TO PAY MINE!!!! Where that Aflac money at 😂.” Sure, the two friends looked to be teasing each other. Notably, both Gray and Wilson had committed technical fouls in the game and hence, needed to pay a fine.

Gray, who was the fourth overall pick in the WNBA draft in 2017, was once a roommate to Wilson. Having spent two seasons at North Carolina University, Gray made a decision to commit to the South Carolina Gamecocks during the 2016-17 season. There, she met Wilson who was also in her junior year, and the duo, with their head coach, Dawn Staley’s planning lifted the Championship title in that season (2016-17). While Gray then decided to declare for the draft, Wilson pursued another year with the Gamecocks. And now when both are earning exceptionally well, the two decided to put another as a scapegoat for their fines.

Gray though was initially drafted by the Dallas Wings, now plies her trade for the Atlanta Dream. The 29-year-old earns $185,000 as part of her deal and has a $494,400 contract for three years with the Dream. Hence, she looks extremely capable of paying her own fine but decided to have some fun with Wilson and give her fans a glimpse of their college bonding. Wilson too looked in the mood as she rejected the proposal and instead asked Gray to pay her fine. And their bond is more than just friendship.

Wilson had once come forward to share that Gray was her “big sister” that she looked up to all the time during an interview with WNBA in June. The South Carolina native also revealed that her warmth helped Gray “to come out of her shell.” This got Gray sharing her personal life with Wilson which helped strengthen their bond and love for each other.

Have an interesting take?

Wilson even remembers that a media person came to her to remark that they “got your girl talking now!” Hence, Wilson’s impact on Gray’s life cannot be diminished.

And now that Lish is open enough to share some fun on social media, Wilson deserves all the more credit. Perhaps, for fans, it would be fitting to see ultimately who pays the fine.
