A'ja Wilson outshining Jokic and Giannis—Is she the new face of basketball greatness?

There is no question that A’ja Wilson is in her best form this year. However, if there was any slight doubt left, the WNBA superstar has wiped out that as well. In the last four games in Paris, the Las Vegas Aces forward has been dominant over any and every opponent. However, who knew she would even take over the NBA’s stars representing their respective countries?

The official X account of Stat Mamba tweeted A’ja Wilson’s latest achievement after today’s 74-88 win. It reads, “Most games with 20 PTS & 10 REB in the 2024 Olympics (Men’s & Women’s): 3 — A’ja Wilson 2 — Nikola Jokić 1 — Giannis Antetokounmpo” It is certainly interesting how the talented star has been performing day in and day out despite facing the roughest crowd reactions in France.

With today’s 20 points and 11 rebounds into the ledger, she has recorded three double-double performances.

Moreover, it will be her fourth career 20+ points and 10+ rebound display in the Olympics. So far, Wilson has only slipped in bringing her best board game against Germany where the Team USA had difficult first and last quarters. Then, she had only added 3 rebounds with 14 points.

On the other hand, the NBA megastar Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, who represents Serbia, has had 3 20+ points and 10+ rebounds performances each but on different occasions. Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing for Greece, has had 4 20+ performances with just one 10+ rebounds. With Serbia making it to the semi-finals, Jokic may still have a chance to equal the record but A’ja Wilson alongside Team USA women’s basketball is only blazing through to top the board.

A’ja Wilson’s aim for the gold continues to strengthen

A'ja Wilson outshining Jokic and Giannis—Is she the new face of basketball greatness?

Have an interesting take?

Team USA for women’s basketball has been nothing but impressive over the last three decades with consecutive wins. Certainly, the changing faces, locations, and opponents have nothing over this dynasty. Currently, one of the major reasons for this is their superhuman-esque star A’ja Wilson. The forward is not simply leading her squad to big wins, she is ensuring that the winning streak continues while her numbers also stay up.

The Aces forward was already leading the tournament in combined steals + blocks. She has 6 steals and 8 blocks so far. Combined, the number 14 brings her to the top of the table in the 2024 tournament. She is also just second in the average scoring with 20.3 points per game. Additionally, her average of 10 rebounds also puts her in the second position in the Games.

While Team USA won, surely, Nigeria D’Tigress did not let the towel drop easily until the very final second. This does not show a weakness of Team USA but is a reality check that the competition is only increasing. But with Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson holding the reins of Team USA, we can surely hope to grab another gold. In fact, just two games keep the group from their tenth gold in the tournament.
