Is Angel Reese the next big thing in the WNBA, or is the hype overblown?

While this year’s rookie class is done with their inaugural season, the next one is getting in line. Earlier this year, UConn sensation Paige Bueckers had decided to play for another season in the NCAA citing that she wanted to play one last time alongside her best friend Azzi Fudd before the two get drafted in the WNBA as one of the reasons. Now, 6 months before their draft, Bueckers and Fudd can’t help but talk about Angel Reese and her game.

Reminiscing their days in the AAU, the two engaged in a conversation where Fudd talked about Reese’s defense and playing magnificence and said, “In AAU we played against her. Even back then, she was a rebounding machine, always crashing the board. She’s always been tall and long. It’s really cool. And also from the DMV, to see her progress her game and play and kind of have the role that she has now with women’s basketball.” Notably, Reese averaged 18.6 points and 13.4 rebounds per game as a senior, ranking second to Lauren Gustin in rebounding among Division 1 players. For her two years at LSU, she averaged 14.4 rebounds per game, which is the most in the SEC history.

On the other hand, Bueckers described Angel Reese’s athletic spirit as “ultra-competitive.” She further mentioned one of the Sky rookie’s distinctive qualities as a team player and said, “You can tell when you’re her teammate, she just instills this confidence within you and makes you believe in yourself even more than you already do.”

Touched by Bueckers’ statement, a fan wrote, “Listen to what Paige said about how she instils confidence in her teammates, you can’t teach that and stats can’t show it, but this might be one of her best attributes as a player.” Indeed, there have been numerous times when Angel Reese has talked about what her teammates mean to her. As a leader, she never fails to uplift her teammates and talk about the importance of their company.

Another fan couldn’t hold themselves back and declared, “Angel Reese my goat.” Given her stellar accolades that have enriched her athletic resume from time to time, Angel Reese is admired by many. And hadn’t it been for her wrist injury, her rookie season would have reached to higher places than it did. Not to mention, her stellar rebounding kept her on top of the league while cementing herself as the double-double queen. Among other records that the rookie has managed to rewrite this year, she also broke the WNBA single-season record for rebounds, notching her 418th in a 79-74 defeat against the Minnesota Lynx.

A fan then placed the three on the same level and wrote, “They are recognizing their level! Only GOAT level player talks about the other one!” This past NCAA season, Paige Bueckers set the record for single-game assists record in a game against Arizona in the March Madness semifinals.

Meanwhile, some fans have expressed a different point of view. One of them suggested that Fudd and Bueckers get drafted by the Storm and wrote, “Storm in the future the three of them,” so that they can reunite with their former teammate Nika Muhl and the three can dominate together again.

However, some fans asserted that Azzi Fudd is going to be picked by the Mystics as one of them wrote, “No she’ll be a mystic,” and the other wrote, “Azzi coming home to the Mystics lol.” Before becoming a Husky, Fudd attained her high school studies in Washington. Moreover, if she is picked by the Mystics, then she will be teaming up with another former Husky, i.e. Aliyah Edwards, and would have a blast.
