Is the New York Liberty's commitment to social justice more impactful than their quest for a championship?

Having played its 28th WNBA season, the New York Liberty is one of the three original franchises left in the WNBA. Through these years, the franchise has made six WNBA Finals appearances and is hoping for its first championship, having Joe and Clara Tsai as its current owners. Besides being a franchise, Liberty has maintained its legacy of being outspoken about equality and social justice issues.

At its core, it has several beliefs that include equality of opportunity, dignity, and respect as the fundamental rights of people which it has pledged to preserve as its first principle. Secondly, it carries diversity as its strength while building community as a central collective value of Barclays Center, Brooklyn Nets, and New York Liberty. With the introduction of a new logo in 2020, the New York Liberty made black one of the primary colors, representing the aesthetic of its NBA counterpart, the Brooklyn Nets. The Nike WNBA Explorer edition authentic jersey represents the City of New York and its ever-growing upward mentality.

The jersey has been carved out of a futuristic design mesh fabric derived from 100% recycled polyester fibers, engineered to be super breathable and lightweight. About the features, the jersey features mint color accents symbolizing the sheen on the Statue of Liberty and a print that has been inspired by the city as a concrete jungle.

Talking about its manufacture, it begins with recycling plastic bottles, which are cleaned, shredded into flakes, and converted into pellets. Then, these pellets are spun into new, high-quality yarn used to make the jersey. This way the brand ensures a peak performance with a lower impact on the environment.

In comparison to virgin polyester, its recycled form helps in reducing carbon emissions by up to 30%. The jersey is part of Nike’s Move to Zero journey towards zero carbon and zero waste. This includes how the brand works to design a product that is sustainable and can help protect the future. The mindset thus reflects in their make.
