Is Caitlin Clark the next big thing in the WNBA, or is Angel Reese stealing the spotlight?

An All-Star and grabbed 21 double-doubles. What else is there for former LSU standout Angel Reese to delight her fans with? Well, by the looks of her defensive skills, it appears that her adversary Caitlin Clark will not be the only rookie to headline the WNBA this year. The ferocious Chicago No.5 has her own ways to chase some legendary names in the record books.

A thrilling face-off unfolded at the Mohegan Sun Arena between the Connecticut Sun and the Chicago Sky. For yet another night, Angel Reese put her rebounding skills on display. After grabbing 3 boards in the opening quarter, the opening of the second quarter saw her script her own history. Seemingly, her 4th rebound of the game takes her season total to 336 (12.3 per contest) which is the 2nd-most by a rookie ever. Earlier, the 6 ft 3 forward surpassed Sylvia Fowles’ tally of 117 to set a franchise record in offensive rebounds.

The only name above her is that of the second-leading scorer in WNBA history, Tina Charles. The iconic center in her debut season was able to grab a total of 398 rebounds eventually. And, with 12 more games to go, Reese will certainly fancy her chances. The only name coming close to Angel Reese in this category is that of the Aces’ kingpin A’ja Wilson. The 2023 WNBA Finals MVP trails the rookie by 16 rebounds.

While things are going pretty smoothly for the rookie in this department, there is one area that requires some significant improvement.

Missing out on wide-open layups from inside the paint summed up the fixture for Angel Reese when Chicago hosted the Mercury this month. A dreaded night that saw her being 4 of 14 (28.6%)  from the field categorized it as the 5th lowest performance of the season.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Caitlin Clark the next big thing in the WNBA, or is Angel Reese stealing the spotlight?

Have an interesting take?

Such has been the case for the rook. In the 27 games so far, she is 131-329 in field goals holding an efficiency of 39.8%. This places 44th overall in the league at the moment. And something similar was witnessed by the 8,910 present at the Mohegan Sun Arena with Reese being just 3 of 12 while shooting her field goals.

Despite the shortcomings, Angel Reese has been a force to be reckoned with in the WNBA. Alongside her arch nemesis Caitlin Clark, the 3x All-American has headlined the rookie rankings soon after the Olympic break. What more can this ferocious rookie bring to the table in her debut season? Only time will tell.
