Caitlin Clark’s fans had a tremendous time when their star broke the WNBA rookie assist record. Clark who was once falling behind her rival Angel Reese in the Rookie of the Year award race, will look to leave no stone unturned after the month-long Olympic break. Not only did she break the WNBA assists record but also cemented her name in the franchise’s history while playing against the Seattle Storm on Sunday as she surpassed Tamika Catchings’s 2002 record which will leave you in awe.
Clark with her exceptional signature shots did what she is famous for: decimating the opponents. The 22-year-old during her NCAA time had scripted history with her 35-feet-three pointer when she surpassed Kelsey Plum‘s all-time highest NCAA D1 women’s points leader. With Clark’s fondness for shooting from beyond the arc, this in itself is a record for the Indiana Fever rookie.

Clark with her exemplary three-pointer once again sent the message loud and clear to all WNBA analysts that she deserved to be ROTY. She hit the second three-pointer taking the Fever to 53 as compared to the Seattle Storm’s 50. Before this game, she had 75 three-pointers in this season and needed just 2 to surpass Catchings’ tally of 76 three-pointers – the most by an Indiana Fever player in their rookie season, and she did it with her second three-pointer.
In the Fever’s history, Catchings had the most three-pointers (76) by an Indiana rookie in 2002. The New Jersey-born who was drafted as the third overall pick in the 2001 WNBA season couldn’t ply her trade that year due to an ACL injury she got during her time with Tennessee. Hence, the next year, Catchings prepped up well and performed to her potential, astounding fans and her critics with her on-court brilliance. As mentioned, she hit 76 three-pointers that year and was also named the WNBA Rookie of the Year. However, this was not the only record she broke during this matchup.
Clark also went ahead of Ticha Penicheiro’s record of most assists in a singular WNBA season. Playing for the now-disbanded franchise the Sacramento Monarchs, Penicheiro had dished out 225 assists during the 1998 season. Before this game, Clark had already hit 223 assists, and she outshone Penicheiro when she served her third assist in the game to Kelsey Mitchell during the third quarter. Not only this, Clark with one of her milestones also became the only rookie after Stephen Curry, and Michael Jordan to achieve a rare feat.
Caitlin Clark lands herself in a prestigious company
“They’ve woken up a monster,” as per Christie Sides, that was Clark’s reaction to her Olympic snub in June. Now that the Olympics has ended, Clark looks to have taken her game to the next level by working hard on herself during the break. The result of this is that Clark during her game against the Phoenix Mercury on Friday in the WNBA return game scored 29 points with 10 assists and 5 rebounds.
Thus she landed right next to Curry and Jordan as one of the three NBA/WNBA rookies to have 29 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds with 70% true shooting multiple times. Clark must definitely be enjoying the company she is in right now.
Rookies in NBA/WNBA History to record 29 PTS, 5 REB and 10 AST on 70% TS, multiple times:
— Michael Jordan ‘85 (2x)
— Stephen Curry ‘10 (4x)and now, Caitlin Clark ‘24 (2x).
