One of the biggest news that the women’s basketball world must have received in the past few months is the launch of Unrivaled. Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier joined hands to introduce the off-season league to their WNBA peers. Another news that broke the internet during the WNBA’s Olympic break was Angel Reese joining the up-and-coming 3×3 league. And now, she explains her choice to stay busy outside of the WNBA.

Talking to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, the seventh overall pick said, “Being able to be in Miami from January to March, not having to go overseas, I never planned on going overseas. So, that already sparked me. Being able to know two great players that are starting something, I think it’s amazing. Who wouldn’t wanna play with two great players like that? I knew they were gonna bring on a couple more dawgs.”

Angel Reese also specified why she joined the Unrivaled League and how it will help the other WNBA players. She said, “Nobody wants to go overseas. A lot of us never wanna have to go overseas but some people do have to go overseas, unfortunately. So, being able to make what six figures here within three months. Just being able to get better at 3 on 3 is something that I love to do. I haven’t been able to play (3 on 3) competitively, but I think I can be able to work on some of my individual skills by being able to play because 3 on 3 exposes everything.”

The Chicago Sky rookie became a member of the six-team league on July 24 which she announced with a post. On her socials, she shared the post by Unrivaled Basketball and wrote, “305 BARBIEEEEE👑 SEE YALL IN THE YAMSSSSSSS🤭”

But talking about the Unrivaled, here is how it will benefit women’s basketball players.

Looking into how the Unrivaled can help WNBA stars like Angel Reese

What’s your perspective on:

Is Angel Reese right about the struggles of playing overseas? Should more be done for WNBA players?

Have an interesting take?

Surely, the Baltimore native does not really need the huge sum of money she will be making in just three months from the Unrivaled League. However, bringing back her point in focus, many WNBA players are used to the traditional 5×5 basketball format. Hence, adding more competitiveness to their playing styles, 3×3 offers more excitement and ruggedness. Not to mention, it will also allow players like Angel Reese to learn a new format of the sport.

At the same time, the league making its debut in January 2025, will also provide great financial benefits to these players. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, “This league will be run opposite of the WNBA season. The average salary in the WNBA is $120K… The salary in this ‘Unrivaled’ league is going to be about double that.”

Apart from the Chicago Sky rookie, Breanna Stewart has added eleven basketball stars like Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, and more. Additionally, Unrivaled’s only NCAA star, Paige Bueckers, is also on her way to Miami after her college career. Giving advantages to some, Angel Reese’s new adventure will also feature the Olympic medalists for 3×3 basketball, such as Rhyne Howard, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum.
