Nika Muhl's rookie brilliance stole the show—Is she the next big thing in the WNBA?

The words ‘Last Dance’ hold a special meaning for basketball fans, and Diana Taurasi may have just had it. The Phoenix Mercury star has not confirmed anything yet, but Taurasi may be playing her last WNBA season. Although she hinted that her future will be better decided by how the postseason ends, many have speculated the glorious end to her more than two-decades-long run in the W. And yet, when Sue Bird went to watch the Phoenix vs. Seattle in the Mercury’s last home game, it was Nika Muhl who was more impressive.

The Storm rookie, who hasn’t much been seen on the court but has made headlines for her pregame outfits, finally scored her first points of the season. They came at the very end of the game, but Seattle won 89-70 over Phoenix. And as Sue Bird pointed out to her partner Megan Rapinoe in their latest podcast episode when the former soccer player was discussing Taurasi, “Hey, wait. Nika Muhl scored her first points.”

“That got me out of my chair, that got me more out of my chair than anything else. I was very happy for her, so that’s cool,” Bird continued. “She was like, she ripped her at half court, got her, got the layup, and got in there. It was perfect for Nika, it was cool.”

After averaging 3 minutes on the court all season long, the point came on the 12th shot of Nika Muhl’s professional career after 53 minutes of action. And while it was a special moment in itself, it was made all the more better because of who was in the audience!

The season’s end became all the more special by the UConn coach Geno Auriemma who made it to the game alongside Bird and Rapinoe. Diana Taurasi and Geno shared a hug after the game, and their pictures went viral on social media afterward.

But now, as time catches up to the Phoenix Mercury icon, Diana Taurasi feels like she could still play more. And while they may not be on the same W teams, Taurasi is happy to see a fellow UConn alum around.

“Always nice to have a fellow Husky around,” gushes Diana Taurasi about Nika Muhl

Before the season started, the Phoenix Mercury had a May preseason meeting with the Seattle Storm, when Nika Muhl finally had the chance to meet Diana Taurasi on court. Per the CT Insider, the Mercury player spoke highly of the Storm rookie. “Yeah, I’ve been a fan of Nika since she got the school,” Taurasi had said in May. “I mean, she plays with that, that grit. She has that Eastern Bloc mindset, which nothing is given to them and I just love the way she works and she’s gonna have a h— of a career, because she loves the game, because she’s selfless.”

High words of praise came from the 42-year-old, who shared a sweet moment with the youngster after that preseason game. “She plays for the team. It’s always nice to have a fellow Husky around. We’ve gone through the same experiences with Coach (Geno Auriemma), so I’m just happy for her.”

Likewise, Nika Muhl is also a big fan of her UConn senior, and might be considering herself lucky at getting the chance to play against someone like Diana Tuarasi in her rookie year. Whether or not this is the Mercury player’s last year in the W, Muhl is ready to carry on the Huskies legacy alongside other alums in the league!
