Can Napheesa Collier's defense be the game-changer the Lynx need to reach the Finals?

WNBA playoffs are all about adapting to changes and seizing opportunities. With the New York Liberty waiting at Barclay’s, the Connecticut Sun and Minnesota Lynx must quickly adapt to advance. And Napheesa Collier of the Lynx just might have the right fix to help her team push through to the Finals.

Following Game 4 of the Lynx vs. Sun, Napheesa stressed the importance of enhancing her defensive prowess. “I think my defense; I wasn’t super happy with it tonight or last game, especially one-on-one. I think just staying in front of my player and helping my team in that way.”

While many might expect the 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) to focus on offense, scoring is definitely not a problem for Collier. In fact, she has averaged 20.75 points per game in the last 4 games against the Sun. Notably, she also led the Lynx with 26 points and 11 rebounds—9 of which were defensive—in their 90-81 Game 3 victory.

Despite her scoring prowess, Napheesa recognizes the importance of a balanced game. “Obviously, you need to score points, but you can’t be giving up points on the other end too, so I think that’s what I’m going to lock in on for the next game.” the Lynx’s No. 24 stated in the post-game press conference.

Her efforts on both ends of the court have been pivotal in tying the series 2-2 with the Sun in the semifinals. However, Napheesa is redefining the phrase “Defending our home,” by noting that her increased defensive presence could help propel her team into the Finals.

In this high-stakes game of ball, Collier emerges not just as a pivotal player but as the very blood in the veins of the Lynx, one whom her teammates need to rally around to secure a win against the Sun.

The Heart of the Lynx: Napheesa Collier

Napheesa Collier’s ability to perform under pressure has been crucial, particularly in the semifinals against the Connecticut Sun. Over the past four games, her statistics show why she is the most important player on the Lynx’s roster: she scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in Game 1, and delivered an impressive double-double to help the team secure a crucial victory.

In Game 4, despite the Lynx’s loss, Collier continued to shine, showcasing her scoring prowess with 29 points while adding 13 rebounds, including three on the offensive end. Her shooting was impressive, as she hit 60% of her field goals and 66.7% from beyond the arc, reinforcing her reputation as a formidable offensive threat.

Her impactful performances have also garnered attention from the NBA. LeBron James,  himself recently took to X to praise her for her Game 3 heroics, with a post stating “FACTS!!! She’s a BEAST! Game so damn smooth and complete! TOUGH,”

Despite all the praise, Collier remains focused on improving her game, “We’re not happy with how we came out the last two games. Our offense lifted us up in the last game, but if that’s not working, we have to rely on our defense. It hasn’t been good the last two games, so we need to go home and defend our court.” she stated

With Game 5 set to take place at the Target Center, the Lynx will benefit from a crucial home-court advantage. What remains to be seen is whether Napheesa Collier’s defensive adjustments can lead the team to victory and secure their ticket to the Finals.
