Is Angel Reese's WNBA history-making overshadowed by accusations of stat-padding? What's your take?

When Angel Reese entered the game against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, the rookie looked forward to a W record. Known for her rebounding skills, Reese had 399 rebounds, just 5 less than Sylvia Fowles’ record of most rebounds in a singular season. And there are no points for guessing that Reese broke the record. However, as she celebrated the night, a certain murmur about her stat padding gained momentum as fans slammed her for her poor shooting skills.

“Most of her rebounds are from her own missed lay ups so that is no record,” one fan commented on the social media networking platform X. The critic was pointing to the fact that Reese had been rebounding off her misses. As of Wednesday, a report had come out that claimed that Reese had 53 rebounds of her misses. Her want to rebound had grown with such tremendous force that out of 374 rebounds, as per fans she would collect her misses, mostly.

Reese’s rebounding ability was noticed by fans when she scored 15 consecutive double-doubles breaking Candace Parker’s record of most back-to-back double-doubles in a singular season. Next, after the Olympics break, she scored 5 consecutive double-doubles with 20 or more rebounds in three back-to-back games. All this helped her to increase her rebounds.

As of now, Reese has overtaken her idol A’ja Wilson in the rebound average with 12.9 rebounds per game, whereas the latter averages 11.8 rebounds per game. All this must have made Reese proud. However, as per some of her haters, it doesn’t amount to much since she has done stat padding collecting from her own misses. Other critics, too, took to social networking platforms to slam Reese.

Fans take a dig at Angel Reese

“If Angel Reese was actually good at basketball, she wouldn’t have nearly as many rebounds as she does. Think about that,” one fan stated. The user was pointing to the fact that Reese has been rebounding her own shots. And if she was great at basketball, she wouldn’t have missed so many. Reese currently averages 13.2 points with 12.9 rebounds per game.

Have an interesting take?

“Angel Reese shoots about 30% and gets about 60% of her rebounds off her own misses..,” another user commented. The fan expressed humorously that Reese gets too many rebounds off her own misses.

“But Angel Reese has so many rebounds!!! Yea 2/3 of them are off her shitty layups that she misses most of the time but still!” another netizen stated. The social media user was pointing out the fact that Reese isn’t known for her shooting skills. She has shot just 16.7% three-pointers and 38.6% free throws in this season.

“Angel Reese grabs 3 or 4 rebounds in one possession because she misses 3 or 4 shots in one possession,” Another critic went on a hyperbole, stating that Reese gets 3 to 4 rebounds in a single possession as she misses her shots too frequently.

“None of the people hating on Angel Reese are bothering to research that, even if you subtract the rebounds she grabbed from her own misses, she’d still lead the league in offensive rebounds—and she’s never led the league in turnovers,” while one fan came to Reese’s support enumerating that even if the rebounds are subtracted, she would still lead the league. Notably, when analysts had calculated her rebounds by subtracting those 53 from 374, Reese was placed next to Wilson in her rebounding skills. And that is not a bad example to set.

Hopefully, Reese will be able to shut all haters with her offensive game. Till then, she can enjoy her time with the Chicago Sky, helping them make it to the playoffs.
