Just as the Washington Mystics were looking to get back on their feet, tragedy struck them again. Apparently, their back-to-back wins against the Dallas Wings are eclipsed by an unfortunate turn of events yet again. From the looks of it, they will have to miss out on the services of their shooting guard Karlie Samuelson courtesy of a finger injury for a second time in less than a month.

The Mystics were closing on yet another impressive display at the Entertainment & Sports Arena. With just 1:30 remaining in the penultimate quarter, the Wings’ Turkish rookie Sevgi Uzun was on her way to making a driving layup. However, standing in her way was the opposition’s No.44 Karlie Samuelson. Following this, Samuelson’s attempt to stop Uzun resulted in dire consequences. Seemingly, a slight nudge to an already injured non-shooting hand finger turned out to be an extremely painful affair for her.

Soon after, she was surrounded by her teammates along with the team’s Head Athletic Trainer Dr. Christina Kennedy. Then, Kennedy accompanied a devastated Karlie Samuelson heading into the locker room. Moreover, the 4,200 people also saw rookie Aaliyah Edwards trying her best to console the EuroCup Finals MVP.

Earlier, Samuelson injured that very left-hand finger in the Mystics’ fixture against the Chicago Sky mid June. Although, she participated in the next three games without having any issues. Now, according to the Washington Post, she will be joining her teammate Brittney Sykes and will be out of action till August.

Both these impactful ballers for the Washington Mystics will be forced to sit on the sidelines until after the Olympics. As for Sykes, she is currently nursing a left high ankle sprain which she suffered in May in a game against Connecticut. Anyhow, she returned to put an end to the Mystics’ 12-game losing streak by helping them win against the Atlanta Dream.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t finish the game. In the final quarter, those in attendance saw her head towards the changing room. Further medical evaluation revealed later that she had a sprain in her left foot. Since then, she hasn’t been a part of the team’s on-court roster.

Indeed, the aforementioned series of events is a sad state of affairs for the Washington Mystics. Fans would hope that both these athletes can recover from their respective injuries and join the squad as soon as they can. We will have to wait and see what will be the impact of these setbacks on the franchise.
