“Unimaginable.” Tina Charles hit the target in the bull’s eyes as she expressed her feelings about coming in the same conversation as Diana Taurasi. The Atlanta Dream may not be as a clear playoff team this season as the Phoenix Mercury. Nevertheless, their star player continues to raise the bar.
The Dream welcomed the Mercury in their house tonight. However, they have not been the best of hosts as they thrashed the visitors, bidding them adieu with a defeat in their hands. But more than that, the spotlight tonight falls on Tina Charles, who climbed closer to Diana Taurasi’s all-time leading scorer spot in the W.
With her 12 points tonight vs Phoenix, Charles surpassed Tina Thompson as the second all-time scorer in the league. She now has 7,491 points. She has achieved this feat in 418 games over her 14-year professional career. Consequently, she also came closer to her former teammate Diana Taurasi, whom she left two years ago without a known reason.

Interestingly, she is also second in the all-time rebounders list of the league. Entering tonight’s game, she had 3,859 boards. With the win’s 17 rebounds added, she now tallies 3,876 boards on her resume. Now, Charles is only 147 rebounds away from surpassing Sylvia Fowles for the throne. But it was not just her who had a glorious night.

Have an interesting take?
The Atlanta Dream gave the visiting Mercury a hard time through the 40 minutes as they defended their home court in the 72-63 win. But that did not stop the 42-year-old Phoenix Star from sweeping a record for herself. She only added 3 points to the team and was not much of use in the 30 minutes that she played. Still, she became the only player in the WNBA history to notch up 10,500 points. Diana Taurasi did this in 554 games, spread over her 20 years of career in the league.
Comparatively, no other player has more than 8,000 points in the league’s 27-year history. It is intriguing how the guard continues to add more records to her name despite coming closer to her final years in the W. Previously, she also became the only basketball player to win 6 Olympic gold medals in the quadrennial tournament’s history.

Indeed, an amazing run by both the players. Even more so for Tina Charles who understands what her team needs and delivers just that. The 2010 first-overall pick out of UConn was the third-best scorer in tonight’s home win with another double-double in the books. The Dream is on a 3-game winning streak, having won over three above .500 teams in these matchups. They will again host the Mercury in two days to try and repeat the heroics.
