Brittney Griner's family support—Is this the secret behind her success on the court?

“Challenging” may very well be a word to define Brittney Griner’s life. Although the storms of battles have calmed down in her life, her professional and personal relationships, which are a showcase for the public eye, have always been a stinging nerve. Still, the ever-so-positive WNBA star finds happiness in the smallest of things. By small, we mean the baby Griners who roam about her house. Another one of whom adds to the litter as she prepares to leave for Paris.

With this, while she may not have an entire roster complete, she will have as many children of her own as the times she has represented the USA in the Olympics. Let us learn more about her children and her personal life.

Professionally, the Phoenix Mercury along with their 6-ft-9 center are doing quite well despite the slow start to the 28th WNBA season. Personally, Brittney Griner can be just as excited. In fact, some delightful news made its way as the Baylor alumna and her wife Cherelle Watson welcomed their very first child on July 8th.

The two had announced the pregnancy news back in April with a photo of them holding hands over an Ultrasound image. The Instagram caption reads, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being 🤍  #BabyGrinerComingSoon #July2024.”

But now with the little one’s arrival and the Paris Olympics calling, Griner finds herself in a tough situation.

Have an interesting take?

“It kind of sucks,” she says via ‘We Need to Talk’. But is also positive that Baby Bash [yet to be confirmed] is going to understand while she lays all her focus back home off-court. “My whole phone is turned into him now,” she adds.

While their son may have just brightened their lives, Griner seems to be a little too sure about his future. When TMZ Sports asked her whether the baby would grow up to be an athlete like her, she did not hesitate to plan the baby’s future already. With quite some confidence, the Mercury star said, “Yeah, yeah. Sports, what? C’mon now. Of course.”

Certainly, the couple are very excited to be surrounded with a positive energy in their home after overcoming the painful detention phase in 2022 and the challenges surrounding her experience with the welcoming of her first two kids.

Brittney Griner and her twins

The 8x WNBA blocks leader has twin girls with her ex-wife and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson. Back in June 2015, the couple announced that Johnson was pregnant through IVF. However, just a day later, Griner filed for annulment citing that she did not know about the IVF and the process was done without her knowledge. The court denied her wish. Still, she went on to part ways with Glory Johnson a month after their marriage. Griner had also mentioned in her reason for divorce that she was forced into it.

The twin girls, on the other hand, were prematurely born at just 16 weeks of gestation on October 12, 2015. Ava Simone and Solei Diem will turn 9 years old in October this year. While we do not know much about her current relationship with the twins, we do know that post-divorce, she tried to get custody of the two. However, they found a way to co-parent. For now, Brittney Griner pays child support to Johnson.

As for the relationship between Johnson and Griner, most of the things about them became a public conversation. In fact, Brittney Griner’s life has been a spectacle for the eyes of the world for some time now, whether it is about her sexual orientation, love life, or detainment in Russia. Still, the talented athlete is slowly finding her way through everything.

Brittney Griner has come home: Life after Russian detainment

On February 17, 2022, the Federal Customs agent in Russia detained the WNBA star who went there to join her Russian team UMMC Ekaterinburg for the season. After a long process of almost 300 days, she was released in a one-on-one prisoner swap for Viktor Bout. Since her return, Brittney Griner has devoted her life to a few things– her wife and their life, the Phoenix Mercury, and the USA.

Moreover, with Griner already announcing that she will never play overseas again, she too can spend a lot more time with her son. As of her professional career, she is helping Phoenix lead their way into better standings.
