Did the refs miss crucial calls in Liberty's win, or was it just tough playoff basketball?

It’s over! Nearly a year after A’ja Wilson and company shattered the Liberty’s dream of winning a championship at Barclay’s, Breanna Stewart has returned the favor. In Game 4 between the Liberty and Aces, New York finally made it to the Finals with a 76-62 win. However, Liberty standout Breanna Stewart’s wife, Marta Xargay, isn’t entirely happy!

Right after the October 6th clash between No.1 and No.4, Xargay took to her official X account and wrote, “Just in case you need another one!!!!” Alongside the note, Xargay reposted a clip from one of the spectators, where Stewart was falling due to tough defensive play by Alysha Clark. Since the officials remained silent despite potential fouls, Xargay seemed a bit upset.

But Xargay isn’t the only one firing up at the Aces after the conclusion of the playoff battle. In fact, Breanna Stewart herself seems frustrated. “You know, I have receipts on the things that were said. The entire team does. But really, my mentality today was to go in and get this one for my wife and her dad,” Stewie told Lucas Kaplan.

The tension between the Aces and Liberty has been brewing for quite some time. It all started with last year’s playoff game, where the Aces and Liberty faced off against each other. The key difference between the two teams was that the Aces came out on top. After A’ja Wilson and her team defeated the Liberty, they were ecstatic.

And, called out New York’s Breanna Stewart.

As Stewart shot only 3 of 17 from the floor, the Aces’ head coach, Becky Hammon, who had just secured a championship title, celebrated by shading Stewart. “3 for 17 is what you need to talk about,” mocked Hammon. But Stewie, being herself, didn’t just talk about it—she turned the tables in Game 4.

In today’s game, the 2024 Olympics gold medalist scored 19 impressive points with 14 rebounds in just 39 minutes of gameplay. It was confirmed that Stewart was indeed motivated by the opponent’s mocking. ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe even revealed as much during a segment of the game.

But it wasn’t just Stewart. Her teammate Sabrina Ionescu also had a chip on her shoulder. Mocked by the Aces for her famous “night night” celebration during their parade, Ionescu stepped up and cooked the Aces, contributing 22 points and 7 rebounds in 36 minutes of gameplay. Now, the Liberty are headed to the finals to face the winner of the Lynx vs. Sun battle.
