Will Caitlin Clark's potential WNBA record against Dallas Wings silence LSU fans, or fuel their displeasure?

The Indiana Fever are marching ahead to the playoffs with sound victories this season. Placed at the sixth position in the W, the Fever has a 19-19 tally and one player who has been credited with their brilliant turnaround after the Olympics break is Caitlin Clark. The point guard, since her admission into the W, has been breaking records. Whether it was the record for most assists (19) in a single game or eclipsing Rhyne Howards’s record of most three-pointers by a rookie in a single season, Clark looks to have done it all. And now the 22-year-old has set eyes on another record that she could eclipse during the game against the Dallas Wings, which might earn her a lot of haters from her ex-rival college, Louisiana State University.

As per the latest post by Across the Timeline, Clark needs just 19 points to set the record for most points by a rookie in the W. Clark currently has 726 points from 38 games and is only next to the LSU Lady Tigers assistant coach Seimone Augustus, who had 744 points in 34 games during her rookie season in 2006.

After graduating from LSU in 2006, the Minnesota Lynx drafted Augustus as the number one overall pick. During her first year, the Louisiana-born started in all the 34 games that she played, averaging a whopping 21.9 points per game. Though her incredible offensive spree could not save the Lynx, who had an abysmal performance throughout the season, nonetheless, it earned her a coveted spot among the record holders. At that time, Augustus broke Cynthia Cooper’s record of 621 points set during the inaugural WNBA season in 1997 while representing the Houston Comets.

Hence, if Clark breaks the record, it will add to her list of exceptional displays. The Des Moines-born currently has 726 points and has played 4 more games than Augustus. And therefore when she takes the court against the Dallas Wings on Sunday, she could be up for surpassing Augustus. However, it could also be an addition to one of the women’s basketball biggest college rivalries.

How the LSU rivalry started with Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes

The LSU-Hawkeyes rivalry started when Iowa met the Lady Tigers in the 2023 Championship Finales. Both the Hawkeyes and LSU were going for their first Championship Game. Thus both had an equal desire to bag the title for the team. The animosity between the two groups was enhanced when LSU’s Angel Reese did John Cena’s ‘You Can’t See Me’ gesture against Hawkeyes’s star Clark. Reese furthermore, pointed to her middle finger, probably as an indication that she deserved the Championship ring, which proved true when the LSU won the game by a 102-85 margin. However, the Hawkeyes weren’t to be taken lightly.

Have an interesting take?

Next year, when the Hawkeyes met the Baton Rouge-based college in Elite Eight, about 12.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the much-anticipated clash. But this time, Kim Mulkey was in for a surprise. The Hawkeyes trumped the Tigers by a 94-87 margin, which only amplified the rumors of their rivalry.

Hence, when Clark accomplishes another feat, displacing Augustus, it might earn her a lot of flak from LSU loyalists. Nonetheless, the fans would be waiting for the game to start soon.
