Just a fortnight back, the Chicago Sky had done something that left the entire basketball world flabbergasted. It was selecting Kamilla Cardoso as the third overall pick and following that choice with Angel Reese as the seventh overall. While the fans were confused at the choice as both Reese and Cardoso had continuously shown their on-court rivalry in college, Teresa Weatherspoon had something else in mind.
Talking to the in-house reporters after day two of the training camp, T-spoon shared the team’s strategy behind getting the SEC rivals on board. She said, “They come in with a tremendous amount of belief in themselves, knowing what they can do. But also, they understand the little things they must be better at. When you have that, you know that they will buy into to becoming better than what they are now.”
Weatherspoon added, “If you’ve ever really watched them, they compete. At all costs, they wanna win. Come from winning programs, they’re coached very well. And I like it.”

Both the defensive hoopers come to the WNBA after winning NCAA championships for their respective programs. They both have inked their marks with several accolades in their college basketball careers. While Dawn Staley’s prodigy had to shift to the US from Brazil to follow her dream, Reese’s popularity has also been a rollercoaster ride.
However, everything was worth it as they have again landed where the team and the coaches are proud of them. But what do the girls have to say so far?

“This place is special”: Angel Reese reflects on her day 1
Matching the role of Kim Mulkey, Reese’s new coach too, has been intense for her. However, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year seems to love it. Talking about her training camp so far, the former Lady Tiger said, “I love a coach that’s fiery. Brings energy every day. You know what you’re gonna get from her. She’s going to bring the best out of you every single day. You want somebody to push you every day out of greatness because I don’t wanna have an off day.”
At the same time, Kamilla Cardoso, who played under a coach who likes pushing her students toward greatness, said all good things about Weatherspoon. Reflecting on Day 1 of the training camp, she said, “She’s an amazing coach. I don’t like to compare people but like it’s very similar to coach Staley. They big on family, they big on little details, and she just hold us accountable. So, that’s what I love about her. She stays true to herself, so, that’s amazing.”
