Can A'ja Wilson surpass Lisa Leslie's legacy in the WNBA? What do you think?

A’ja Wilson has done it! For just the second time in the WNBA, a player has been voted a unanimous MVP. The only other player to do so is Cynthia Cooper, who earned two of these titles. But Wilson joins Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson for her third such honor. However, Leslie goes a step further and hints at another milestone that she believes the LV Aces superstar could achieve.

In a recent post on X, Jackson, Swoopes and Leslie congratulate A’ja Wilson for her accomplishment. The former Sparks star, Leslie, said, “You have been outstanding all season long. You have been the queen of the court. Congratulations. And you know what? 3 MVPs and you’re still young enough. You’re probably be gonna the first person ever to win 4 WNBA MVPs.”

The 4x Olympic gold medalist then laughs. “I’m not tryna put pressure on you, but good luck. Congratulations again and love you,” making a heart with her hands. A’ja Wilson’s ‘second mother’ Dawn Staley, who coached Wilson at the University of South Carolina, couldn’t hold back her excitement either. She wrote on X, “THE UNANIMOUS MVP OF @WNBA BELONGS TO @_ajawilson22 ! Congrats A! Deserving! Earned! And Forced this one! And to the voters, I’m proud to say you represented the game well….see yall for @WNBA DPOY soon! 🥰🥰🥰”

“I am truly in awe of your greatness,” Swoopes added. While Jackson said, “You’re carving out a legacy that will probably never be matched again, it’s pretty incredible to watch. Historic but legendary. Keep being great.”

Unlike last year, the race wasn’t as close in 2024 and the Aces center broke one record after the other. The most historic one was when she became the first player in the W to record 1000 points in the season. Becky Hammon will be over the moon as her team begins their quest for a three-peat vs. the Seattle Storm today.

She said in mid-September, “I don’t want it to ever get lost on how good (A’ja) is. She just does it all. She’s in the middle of a run that sometimes I want to shake her and say, ‘Do you know how good you are?’ But then I don’t want to shake her because I don’t want to wake her up. She can just stay in whatever zone she’s in.”

Have an interesting take?

Where did this motivation come from? Perhaps the one voter who placed Wilson in fourth place last year! Staley had something to say about them too, but A’ja Wilson just drew motivation to work harder.

“I appreciate you,” A’ja Wilson says to the anonymous voter who put her in fourth place in the 2023 MVP voting

Last season was a head-to-head race between A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, and Alyssa Thomas. Stewart ultimately won with 446 points, while Thomas came in second at 439, and Wilson third at 433. However, when it was revealed that there was a single voter who had placed Aces guard Chelsea Gray in the third spot, chaos erupted.

Dawn Staley revisited that time two days ago when she wrote on X, “Let’s see if the last season’s 4th place voter reveals herself/himself with a 2nd, 3rd or another 4th place vote this season…..yeah I’m messy. 🤣🤣🤣” So far no one has come forward, and they likely never will after this year!

But nevertheless, A’ja Wilson had nothing but gratitude for that voter as she said last year during the Aces championship rally, “Whoever you are out there that voted me fourth (for MVP), thank you. Thank you so much. I wanna say I appreciate you, ’cause that just means that I got a lot more work to do.”

However, none of that stopped the fire to catch the WNBA legend Rebecca Lobo on its route who was suspected of that one vote, something she herself denies. Wilson certainly took those words to heart and dominated the W like no other. There were conversations around Caitlin Clark also possibly joining the race. Incidentally, she placed fourth this year, because the A’ja Wilson effect is undeniable. Who knows, she might actually win it more than thrice as Lisa Leslie said!
