Can any modern Team USA ever match the dominance of Jordan's Dream Team?

Can you beat the Dream Team? Michael Jordan’s 1992 Dream Team is considered the golden standard in basketball but not for Draymond Green, who made a controversial statement on his podcast. And now the WNBA legend Lisa Leslie has chipped in her point of view by applauding the Dream Team and putting ice on the flames while for Green, she added oil.

Leslie took to her social media networking platform X to disapprove of Green’s take. According to her, the Dream Team is considered one of the best basketball teams the USA produced in its rich history. Therefore, the 2x WNBA champion put her thoughts into the basket!

On X, Leslie stated her thoughts, “Hold on! Hold on! Stop the prez. Draymond Green! What y’all talking about? 92 Olympic team. Bro, this team right now don’t wanna see them, that team. That is not even possible. First of all, LeBron has to rescue Team USA almost every game. They then got for KD and he was healthy enough to come back… Steph Curry is amazing. Listen, I don’t know why they haven’t played Tatum that much.”

Team USA is the favorite to lift the title at the end of group stages. They have advanced to the knockouts by beating Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico. Outsmarting Serbia in the first two quarters, before amping up their game, Team USA players defeated the medal contenders by a 110-84 margin.

In addition, they upended South Sudan and Puerto Rico by a 103-86 tally and 104-83 scorecard, respectively. This made Green compare Team USA with the 1992 Dream Team.

“Crazy and then you’re talking about Joel Embiid. He don’t wanna see Patrick Ewing. Come’on you talking about Charles Barkley at the peak of his career? Bro Jordan, Pippen, Magic. Like you’all stop better playing with this new school vs old school. You’all… Did I even say, Michael… The Michael Jordan? The defensive, the height, the length, the offense… David Robinson… John Stockton, bro. There are not enough names. I don’t care. I love all of our new-age guys y’all don’t wanna see 92 at any point., I rest my case. Mic drop.” Leslie added.

The first player to dunk during a WNBA game applauded the Dream Team, comprising legends such as Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, and David Robinson. The Dream Team had defeated all their opponents with almost double the point gap. They won eight games straight, culminating in a gold medal victory, against Croatia by a blowout margin of 117-85.

While Barkley had 18 points per game with 4.1 rebounds per game, Ewing had 5.3 rebounds per game. Jordan scored a phenomenal 14.9 points per game with 4.8 assists per game, whereas Pippen had 5.9 assists per game. To put the cherry on top of it, Magic added 5.5 assists per game. It was the combined effort of the team that allowed them to win the gold medal. Hence, Leslie opposed Green’s unique stand.

Draymond Green supports the current USA team over the Dream Team

The 34-year-old acknowledging the comparisons between the Dream Team and the current Team USA stated “I’m taking the 2024 team seven days a week” during an episode of The Draymond Green Show as per Yahoo Sports. Green added, “I think the 2024 team beats the Dream Team five out of seven games.” Although he did admit that Dream Team had Hall of Famers and GOATs, he sided with the current team since as per him, “the versatility on that team, the star power, the scoring, I don’t think the Dream Team can do anything with that.”

Notably, Green pointed out the threat posed to the opposition by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant. Plus, the team had so much “versatility” since James could play the role of a connector between layups while Curry could shoot his exceptional three-pointers. All this makes the 2024 team a complete package.

Fans can now take sides with Lisa Leslie coming out to defend the Dream Team. But the question still looms. What do you think? Can Team USA beat the Dream Team?
