Back-to-back champions, the Las Vegas Aces got their first taste of the Caitlin Clark effect on Saturday. And they were able to sail past the challenge with ease by securing a 99-80 victory in their own backyard. Moreover, the event also marked a reunion between two former Hawkeyes. The sellout crowd at the Michelob ULTRA Arena witnessed Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin on opposite ends for the first time. A third Hawkeye alumna who took the court was the Aces’ No. 17 Megan Gustafson. To everyone’s delight, this meetup got even more special when another Iowa icon decided to show up for the clash.

Former Iowa coach Lisa Bluder didn’t want to miss the chance to see two of her proteges lock horns against one another. So, she decided to be among the ones who narrate this story. Joining alongside the team of commentators, Bluder proudly expressed, “We had three Hawks on the floor at the same time. So that was pretty darn neat. I’m telling you, I’m so proud of every one of them.”

Although the game ended in favor of the Aces, the rookies had their fair share of contributions for their respective teams. It wasn’t an ideal night for the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer as she finished her outing in single digits. In her 29 minutes on the floor, Clark scored 8 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 7 assists. She was 2 of 8 from the field.

On the other hand, with the help of 2 three-pointers, the 23-year-old Martin put together 12 points. In addition to this, she was 3 of 5 while shooting from the field and converted all her attempts from the free-throw line.

Soon after the game, the commentary team got hold of the rookie and asked her to describe her experience of facing her former teammate.

Kate Martin on her face-off with Caitlin Clark

Congratulating the 18th overall pick WNBA draft pick on her phenomenal show, the commentators asked her about the vibes of the crowd and playing in front of her former coaches. Soon after, the focus shifted towards her thoughts on facing Caitlin Clark. To which, the 23-year-old said, “It was weird. I’m not going to lie. Looking out on the court, seeing her in a different jersey than me. It was obviously different. But, It’s really fun.”

Further, the former Iowa point guard reflected on how she, along with Clark, has been living a dream life ever since they turned pro. Being grateful for the opportunities provided, Martin also expressed her delight in competing at the highest level.

The two of them are scheduled to face each other again in July. Martin had the last laugh this time around, but fans will be eagerly waiting for Clark’s response. Till then, both of them have a pretty hectic schedule ahead.
