Is Caitlin Clark's stardom overshadowing Lexie Hull's crucial contributions to Indiana Fever's success?

When Indiana Fever got the top draft pick in 2024, changes were inevitable in the team. Not only were they experiencing newfound popularity in ticket sales and viewerships, rising to a .500 team, and playoff-bound, but they were also experiencing changes in the lineup. Lexie Hull went from a starter to a key role player when Indiana was swept into the Caitlin Clark mania. Within a few games, she built a chemistry with CC. Despite diminished minutes, Hull has gained confidence in her new role.

Amid the coaching changes and uncertainties at Fever, Lexie Hull stopped by The Ringer’s WNBA podcast. She touched on Caitlin Clark emerging as a true leader within the team. While Clark is undoubtedly a scene-stealer, Hull states that fans fail to notice the confidence she gives her teammates.

She gives her own example. “I think for me, especially as a point guard and as someone that’s delivering a lot of the passes that lead to shots, if I miss, she’s [Clark] definitely going to say you got the next one.

This is interesting when certain NBA players (like Charles Barkley) accuse the WNBA of being jealous of Clark. With the Iowa guard’s arrival, Hull had to defer her starting position to her. Hull had been in the starting lineup in the past seasons – she started 25 of the 30 games she played in 2023 – and this change appalled most fans. Her mom admitted that staying on the bench in Indiana’s 2024 season opener affected Lexie’s confidence. But she worked hard in the gym and her way back into the starting lineup after the Olympic break.

With Caitlin Clark came more scrutiny on the entire team. Fans couldn’t stomach how underplayed Hull was at the start of the season. It was hard on Hull too but she says now, “I can count on her for keeping me confident and positive. So yeah, I think that shows the player that she is and the leader she is as a point guard.” And despite what anyone says, Hull doesn’t hold it against Caitlin.

Lexie Hull adapts to a new role in Indiana

Hull adapted to her new teammate phenomenally. After the Olympics, she’d come off the bench to guard Indiana’s opponents while her teammates scored. In August, she made a good case for sharing the starting position with Clark.

Is Caitlin Clark's stardom overshadowing Lexie Hull's crucial contributions to Indiana Fever's success?

Have an interesting take?

Even Clark was floored by Hull’s shooting ability. She called Lexie “incredible” and skilled at playing from both ends of the floor. Moreover, the duo has developed a great bond, even spending the off-season playing golf with each other. The rookie even had a cute surprise for her teammate on her birthday last month.

Hull finished the 2024 season averaging 20 minutes per game along with 5.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 1.1 ASG. But more importantly, she’s played the best basketball of her career so far in 2024, becoming an irreplaceable asset in Indiana’s defense. Anyone who thought the starting position would be cause for friction between Clark and Hull was sorely mistaken.
