Is Leonie Fiebich the most underrated player in the WNBA right now?

From Caitlin Clark to Angel Reese, this year’s rookie class sure did dominate all the headlines. But only one of them continues to make an impact in the post-season play, i.e. the New York Liberty’s Leonie Fiebich. The 24-year-old German basketball player was drafted in 2020 but didn’t make an appearance till this season. She went from an unknown acquisition to an important rotation piece due to a trade that landed her on the New York Liberty’s roster.

Cut short to last week, Fiebich was announced as the runner-up for the Sixth Player of the Year. She joined the star-studded Liberty after the training camp and maintained an average of 6.7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in the regular season. In the post-season, she is averaging 10.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. So, let’s take a look at how much she is making with the team.

Details of Leonie Fiebich’s salary and WNBA contract

In April 2020, Fiebich signed a 3-year deal with the Los Angeles Sparks after she was drafted by the franchise as the 22nd overall pick. The deal was worth $187,738 with an average annual salary of $62, 579.

However, she had not started playing in the league at the time but was active with Wasserburg in Germany. Then, in 2021, she was traded to Chicago Sky with Stephanie Watts and Gabby Williams. Still, she was not playing in the WNBA and continued competing in Europe for different basketball clubs.

Then last year, Fiebich was traded to New York as a part of a 4-team trade that included Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Phoenix. At that time, Fiebich signed a 4-year deal with the Liberty worth $297,045. This season she received a base salary of $67,249. In the 2025 season, she will be receiving a base salary of $68,595. Moving onto the 2026 season, Fiebich stands to make $75,456.

This brings us to the last leg of her multi-year deal with the Liberty. For the 2027 season, Fiebich will be making $85,745 as the base salary amount that will reach the agreed amount in the deal of $297,045. However, this isn’t all of her earnings.

Besides the salary she gets from her WNBA contract, Leonie Fiebich earns from her participation in several European basketball clubs as well. In 2016, she stepped into playing professional basketball back home. As a result, she played for the Jahn Munchen basketball club for two years.

In her first season with the club, she averaged 12.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, while in her second season, she averaged 16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

After that, she signed with Wasserburg, which is a German multi-sports club best known for its basketball. There she ended up being named as the best Bundesliga newcomer of the 2018-19 season for her average of 10.3 points, 8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. The next season, Fiebich could play only one game as she tore her cruciate ligament at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.

However, she returned in the 2020-21 season and joined the French team called Flammes Carolo Basket. Thereafter, she moved to Australia to play for the Warwick Senators in the 2022 NBL1 West Season.

In the 2022-23 season, Fiebich teamed up with Casedemont Zarogoza of the Liga Feminina de Baloncesto and played for two seasons before finally departing for the WNBA. While her salary in Europe hasn’t been disclosed yet, she is sure to be earning a figure higher than her WNBA salary, as most stars do.
