Did Christine Brennan overstep her boundaries, or was DeWanna Bonner's reaction justified in defending her teammate?

After the Connecticut Sun guard, DiJonai Carrington poked Caitlin Clark in the eye during game 1 of the Round 1 of WNBA playoffs, veteran reporter Christine Brennan stepped up to ask Carrington if she had done it purposefully. While Carrington denied such allegations, a persistent questioning by Breanna did not go down well with her Sun teammates, especially DeWanna Bonner, who confronted Brennan about it. And with the WNBPA issuing statements against Brennan, the WNBA reporter, as per the rumor, has filed a lawsuit against Bonner.

“The update here that Christine Brennan filed a complaint against DeWanna Bonner for confronting her about her questioning of DiJonai Carrington is ASTOUNDING. It adds even more context to why the WNBPA would want to revoke her credentials,” popular reporter Frankie de la Cretaz posted on social media on Monday. And going by the current narrative, it doesn’t look like Bonner is in for an easy way out.

During one of the practice sessions for Game 2, Brennan had asked Carrington if she had stuck Clark on purpose. The same sentiment was echoed by Clark fans on social media as the ROTY could not perform well in the Game 1 and a major reason behind it was speculated to be the black eye. Clark, after the incident, could only hit 2 of the 13 three-pointers she attempted as the Fever lost the game. During her media session, Carrington stated that she hadn’t intentionally hit Clark, and was in fact, unaware that she hit her. But then Brennan interrogated her whether she laughed about it later in the game. Witnessing her teammate going through such difficult questions did not go down well with Bonner.

The Sun guard, as per Ben Strauss of The Washington Post, conversed with Brennan regarding the interview and asked her to “treat her teammates like humans.” Brennan, on the other hand, opined that the WNBA was too sensitive and spoke of her track record of reporting difficult issues, something that many felt was at play when Carrington hit Clark, unintentionally. However, Brennan has come forward to quash all rumors.

According to the latest tweet by Brennan, she hasn’t filed any such case. And instead asked Sarah Spain that she could have contacted her directly if she wanted to have clarity on the news. Brennan, while replying to Spain’s tweet about the lawsuit, stated, “Hi Sarah, this is inaccurate. It is false. I have not filed a complaint. I have not contacted anyone at the league. Your sources are wrong. You and I have had a long and good relationship which is why I always enjoy speaking with you. Why didn’t you call me before posting this?” Meanwhile, the WNBPA had also issued a statement against Brennan.

WNBPA and Christine Brennan involved in a war of words

What’s your perspective on:

Did Christine Brennan overstep her boundaries, or was DeWanna Bonner's reaction justified in defending her teammate?

Have an interesting take?

Looking at her controversial questions, the authorities felt that Brennan was trying to make a narrative out of it. The body accused her of being “indecent and downright insincere,” before opining that she didn’t deserve the credentials of being a popular journalist. She was further tainted for taking the limelight away from the award season as Carrington had bagged the Most Improved Player award. Concluding their lengthy statement, the WNBPA enumerated that it would “stand up for them (players).” And defended Carrington. Meanwhile, Clark denied Carrington’s purposeful involvement all the while.

When Clark was asked if the black eye affected her ability to score, she outright denied this possibility. Furthermore, the 22-year-old also shared that Carrington didn’t do it on purpose, expressing “It wasn’t intentional by any means. Just watch the play.” However, when the WNBPA was involved in a war of words with Brennan, her organization USA Today, came forward to defend her.

According to the organization, “journalists ask questions and seek truth,” and all she was doing was trying to report it in an unbiased manner from both sides. Furthermore, the media house denied any claims, of diverting the narrative, that were leveled against her by the WNBPA, and as per them, she was just doing her job.

And now that, Brennan has come out to share her side of the story, hopefully, it will put to rest all rumors. And, all the parties involved will not allow the issue to escalate and solve their problems soon.
