“You’re something special,” were the words that Maya Moore shouted out to Caitlin Clark on her record-breaking night. The next thing fans saw was Clark blushing like a fangirl as she whispered to her teammate, “Maya Moore just said that, I might faint.” Such is the impact of Moore.

Stunning everyone with her incredible legacy, 4x WNBA Champion has caught the attention of the Aces banter queen, A’ja Wilson. In one of her recent Instagram stories, A’ja Wilson was left speechless by Moore’s career record of 563-95. “DAMN!!!” is all she could write on her story.

Notably, espnW has shared a Maya Moore appreciation post on their Instagram page, showcasing her WNBA career accolades along with a video montage of her stellar dunks and 3-pointers while she played for the Minnesota Lynx.

Bursting onto the scene, Moore won the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2011. She secured four WNBA championships in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017, while playing for the Minnesota Lynx. Moreover, she also received the MVP honors in 2013 for her clutch performances during critical plays.

Besides winning the championship title, Moore also claimed three All-Star Game MVP honors in 2015, 2017, and 2018, displaying her on-court dominance in showcase events. In 2014, she distinctively led the league with her scoring and offensive prowess, earning the WNBA Scoring title.

However, she was carving her path in her early years of high school and college too as she was the National Gatorade Player of the Year, Gatorade Female Athlete of the Year, and a McDonald’s All-American. Similarly, during her time at UConn, Moore achieved back-to-back national championship titles in 2009 and 2010.

She has flourishingly represented the United States on the international level by winning gold medals in both 2012 London Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Indeed her presence on the hardwood has brought dynamic changes to the game, however, her inspiring path continued beyond that.

Why did Maya Moore retire?

The UConn legend was averaging 18.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game before she hung her boots up. On January 16th, 2023 Maya Moore hit the brakes on her fast-moving WNBA career saying, “It’s time to put a close to the pro basketball life. I walked away four seasons ago, but I wanted to officially retire.”

Despite stepping away from the league in 2019, Moore made an official announcement 4 years later that she was stepping away from the game. “I am extremely thankful for the opportunities that the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx and basketball have given me in my lifetime…It was a dream come true for me to play basketball at the highest level and help build the foundation for women’s basketball.”

The reason behind her distance from the court was her shift in focus towards criminal justice reform. She wanted to help Jonathan Irons (now her husband) with his release from prison. To do that, Maya Moore worked towards getting his 50-year sentence overturned in 2020.

Notably, Irons was 16 years old when sentenced for Stanley Stolter’s nonfatal shooting during a burglary. Moore’s efforts helped surface the fact that the reports contained no DNA, footprints, fingerprints, or physical evidence of Irons that could link him to the crime. 9 days after his release, Jonathan Irons tied the knot with Maya Moore.
