Is Chennedy Carter's illness the final nail in the coffin for Chicago Sky's playoff dreams?

When the Chicago Sky entered the WNBA season, they had quite a big task at hand. After their interim head coach, Emre Vatansever was replaced with Teresa Weatherspoon, the Sky had to do the rebuilding work this season. While Weatherspoon was able to form a formidable team with Chennedy Carter, Angel Reese, and Kamilla Cardoso, the Sky after the Olympics break has won just one game out of the 8 matchups. And now with Carter’s latest health update, it has increased the woes and also thinned Sky’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs.

Carter last played a game against the Las Vegas Aces in late August which the Sky lost by a close 77-75 margin. Since then, Carter has missed out on the last three games which were crucial considering that Reese & Co. are trying their best to qualify for the playoffs. And now a fan account on Tuesday gave the latest updates regarding Carter from the hospital.

Chennedy Carter spent all last week in the hospital in chicago. While we would love to respect her privacy as she recovers, we would like to still keep everyone informed. The process is moving in the right direction and we wish to see her back out there soon,” a fan account tweeted on X.

In the images and a video snippet uploaded along with the tweet, Carter can seen lying in her hospital bed. The Sky had abruptly canceled last week’s practice on Tuesday after multiple players were reported to have fallen ill suddenly. The athletes were then spotted donning a mask as per the COVID-19 protocol at the Sachs Recreation Center. Carter, on the other hand, has been said to test positive for COVID-19 before their game against the Washington Mystics last week. Thus, the latest update on Carter has played a spoilsport to Sky’s plans of making it to the playoffs, as Carter looks to take her time recovering.

As the Sky was looking for players, they found an able scorer in Carter. The 25-year-old was applauded so much that at one time she was considered a fierce rival to Caitlin Clark. Starting in 15 games out of the 28 she played, Carter scored a team-high average of 17.2 points per game and shot 50% field goals. Hence, she was considered an important link in the trio consisting of Reese and Cardoso. However, after Carter fell ill, the team lost all their games from that point and is lacking offensively.

After Kahleah Copper, Alanna Smith, and Courtney Williams departed in trade or free agency, the Sky acquired Diamond DeShields along with drafting Reese and Cardoso. While Weatherspoon gave the defensive responsibility to Cardoso, Reese was entrusted with using her rebounding skills. Meanwhile, Carter was their prime shooter. The Sky got the eighth position in the WNBA rankings which kept their hopes alive of making it to the playoffs.

However, after Carter’s health issues, the Sky has lost all its games. This has somewhat come off as a reality check for Weatherspoon and her team who have won just 11 games out of their 32 matchups this season. And if the Sky do not end their woes here by finding a new offensive shooter, they are likely to suffer a setback this season which will thin their chances of making it to the playoffs since the top 8 teams qualify for the eliminator series.

Fans would be hoping that either Sky’s leading scorer recovers soon or Marina Mabrey and Reese do their magic. Hopefully, Chicago’s chances of making a comeback will be clear soon when they next clash with the Aces which will be the first of their remaining eight games in the regular season.
