Kelsey Plum vs. Spike Lee—who brought more fire to Game One? Let's hear your thoughts!

Kelsey Plum has emerged somewhat of a lone warrior for the Las Vegas Aces today. Despite her heroics, the away team lost by 87-77 at the hands of the hosting Liberty. And while she was trying to give her best, unfortunately, the 28-year-old faced a showdown not only on the court but even off it from Spike Lee.

As Breanna Stewart made a free throw for the Liberty, the score read 58-44 in favor of last year’s runner-ups. While this was enough to challenge Plum’s dominance, the popular filmmaker Spike Lee was seen arguing with the California-born as she tried to give him a taste of his own medicine. Watching their star Plum in such a heated situation, a fan commented “Kelsey a DAWG,” while appreciating her for having a resilient spirit.

The game started with the New York Liberty scoring the first points as the Aces looked to close the gap. In two such instances, Plum helped the reigning champions lessen the lead, however, she couldn’t end it completely. Therefore, when Plum emerged as the lone warrior for the Aces she was applauded by the fans. She hit a team-high 24 points with 4 assists, shooting 50% three-pointers in a losing cause. And Lee must have been happy about it.

The New York Knicks fan is popular for supporting New York-based franchises. Even during Game 2 of Round 1 against the Atlanta Dream this year, Lee was present on the sidelines of the court and gave a high five to the Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, which according to her changed the momentum of the game. Ionescu went ahead to score a playoff career-high 36 points with 9 assists and that sealed the deal for the New York-based franchise. Even in today’s matchup, Lee was up to some mischief.

When Ionescu scored a three-pointer during the game, she instantly pointed her finger at Lee, somewhat stating that his magic was working for the Liberty. Lee too stood up from his courtside seat to applaud Ionescu, which once again is proof that he is an ardent New York supporter. However, the Aces fans were sympathetic to Plum for going through so much today and still giving an exceptional performance.

Have an interesting take?

“Spike is doing it again! First the Knicks vs Pacers and now Liberty vs Aces ! The Knicks lost that series!,” one fan commented. The user was reminding the Aces fans that Spike Lee had a difficult relationship with Reggie Miller and had often participated in trash talk against him. But this year when the Knicks were facing the Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Lee’s trash talk proved harmful for the Knicks as they were eliminated from the series by a 4-3 margin. Hence, the fan was somewhere subtly stating that the Aces would emerge victorious in this semi-final series.

“According to the WNBA statement they are going to take action against him right?,” another user commented. The follower was concerned about Plum and most probably was referring to the DiJonai Carrington incident when the WNBPA had issued a statement recently against Christine Brennan for persisting that Carrington had intentionally poked Caitlin Clark in the eye and trying to make a narrative out of it. As per the fan, Lee too was being disrespectful to a player and hence some action should be taken against him.

“I hope she knocks that red hat off his scrawny head,” another Aces fan wished that Plum knocked off the red hat that Lee was donning. As per the fan, this would have been an apt revenge for disturbing Plum during an ongoing game.

“one thing about KP, she gone talk her shit and don’t care who it is 😭😭😭😭😭,” another follower commented. Most notably Plum had recently caught all eyes when she had with pride revealed about trash-talking in the WNBA. She had compared it to the NBA and opined that even the W “talk like y’all talk” while making an appearance on All the Smoke. She had also revealed her intentional to trash talk with Diana Taurasi during the Olympics. Hence according to the fan, Plum too enjoys a competitive game and would have given it back to Lee.

“Kaitlin Klark wouldn’t snitched to the refs,” however one critic stated that while Plum went to the referee and informed her of her situation, Clark wouldn’t have done so. Maybe this assumption stems from the fact that while Clark has been dealt with physically she hasn’t cribbed about it till now.

Now that the Aces have lost game 1, it will be interesting to see how they recover and help their team win the series. As for Lee, he might also come in the remaining games, so Plum needs to be careful.
