“It’s hard to pick and choose when both of us are on, it puts the defense in a really tough spot.” Caitlin Clark had shared about her experience playing alongside Kelsey Mitchell as their partnership played a pivotal role in securing the Indiana Fever’s playoff spot this season. However, uncertainty looms over whether this dynamic duo will hit the court together next season, as Mitchell currently lacks a contract. Despite this, Mitchell’s congratulatory message to Clark hints at a possibility of her remaining with the Fever, leaving fans in a mix of anxiety and hope for the future.
Recently, the Indiana Fever shared a heartfelt video featuring clips of every player offering short messages to congratulate their rookie star on earning the ROTY honor this season. Among these messages, Kelsey Mitchell’s stood out for its deeper implications. An account dedicated to Caitlin Clark’s updates later pointed out that Mitchell’s words seemed to hint at her commitment to staying with the team.

Mitchell and Clark had been one of the better backcourt duos in the league post-Olympic break. They also became the first duo in WNBA history to each make 100 three-pointers in the same season. On the side, the veteran finished with an impressive average of 19.2 points per game, tying her with Clark as the franchise’s top scorer. She also led the team in scoring during their two playoff games against the Connecticut Sun.
This buzz gained momentum shortly after Indiana Fever General Manager Lin Dunn emphasized that retaining Kelsey Mitchell tops the team’s offseason agenda. With Kelly Krauskopf returning to her role as president, Dunn expressed optimism that she will effectively negotiate a deal with Mitchell’s agents. Yet, amid Dunn’s assurance, a subtle gesture from Mitchell while congratulating Caitlin Clark has left fans hopeful but still uncertain about what lies ahead for the talented guard.

Kelsey Mitchell’s message to Caitlin Clark ignites momentary hopes
Since Kelsey Mitchell stepped onto the WNBA stage in 2018, she has remained a steadfast player for the Indiana Fever. In 2021, she further cemented her dedication by signing a three-year extension with the team, making it clear that Indiana is where she wants to be. But the rumors circulated after her somewhat ambiguous comments regarding the WNBA All-Star Game, set to take place on the Fever’s home court next year.
“Obviously, I’ve been in Indy the last few years of my life. But I’m excited that Indy gets a chance to host it. Shout-out to Indy for that. So I’m excited for them and the city,” Mitchell stated earlier. Then during her exit interview, the Fever No.0 emphasized that she plans to take a more selfish approach, prioritizing what she feels is best for herself before making any decisions. So given the uncertainty and her dynamic with Clark, some are still cautious.

The 28-year-old guard has consistently demonstrated her value to the team. She made an impressive debut as their second-highest scorer during her rookie season, and for the next six years, she has led the way as the team’s top scorer. As a crucial asset on a roster filled with young talent under 25, her decision to stay next year would mean a lot to fans. While one fan interpreted Mitchell’s congratulatory message to Clark with a neutral perspective, he still holds on to hope for her stay.
“One can hope.“
But more importantly, aware of their dynamic previously, Clark had written “Backcourt homie,” for a post showing their dominant performance in a win against the Dallas Wings. Mitchell replied back with “riding wit you, 22.” So Mitchell’s remark now just seems to be a play on their bond, a way of saying she’s always got her back.
“Kelsey is saying she’ll have Caitlin’s back, not actually playing with her in the same backcourt.“

“I think it was just a cheeky way of saying she will always have her back.“
It’s clear that Mitchell has formed a strong bond with rookie Caitlin Clark, and their mutual admiration shines through. In the same video, she praised Clark, acknowledging that her accomplishments this season are remarkable and not something many can achieve. Even Clark recently expressed her appreciation for Mitchell by commenting, “Proud of ya,” on one of her posts. So, another fan, though hopeful for Mitchell’s stay, interprets her comment about being in Clark’s backcourt as a testament to the connection they share.
“Maybe she metaphorically speaking about non BB friendship but hope she stays! “
