Caitlin Clark's mind games—genius strategy or just plain unsportsmanlike? What's your take?

Former teammates, Kate Martin and Caitlin Clark, led the Hawkeyes to great heights during their time at Iowa. While they were inseparable on the court at that time, moving to the WNBA has slightly changed the dynamic between them. The hilarious banter that comes along with it is great, though! Martin and Clark don’t leave a single chance to look out for each other off the court, but the moment they step on the floor, it’s a different story.

Elaborating on the same, the Las Vegas Aces rookie spilled the beans as they prepare to host the Indiana Fever on Tuesday. The last time these two played against each other, which was also the first time when they saw each other since Draft Day, led to some hilarious back and forth.

As per Martin, Clark tried to ruin her best friend’s play by talking trash. Describing their sporty encounter, she said, “She kept trying to talk to me and smile at me and I was like, ‘Hey like I need to focus on this play.’ I was trying so hard not to mess up the play.”

The moment turned memorable when the Iowa coaches, Lisa Bluder and Jen Jensen, looked at the two and smiled. “Our Iowa coaches were right there and so that was really cool for them. I think we got some really cool pictures of our Iowa coaches smiling at us and Caitlin’s guarding me, I’m in the corner and so, I’m hoping for more of that tomorrow night as well,” Martin told reporters ahead of their clash.

The conversation then took an interesting turn as Martin elaborated on the back-and-forth she had with Clark, as both of them are super competitive on the court. She said, “We did talk a little bit of trash back and forth. Obviously, we both want to win, we’re both very competitive, and it was funny last time we played, you know, we’d give each other a little shove, talk a little trash back and forth to each other.”

However, she also upheld the sacred nature of their friendship and said, “But it’s all in good fun, obviously we are best friends.” Such is the beauty of their friendship. Talking about the same bond, their head coach at Iowa, Lisa Bluder, shared some beautiful words after they faced each other last time.

After the Aces beat the Fever 99-80 back in May, Bluder made a heartfelt admission. “[It was] so rewarding. When you see your athletes achieve their dreams, that’s what coaching is all about. I absolutely love it. They’re doing what they love to do. And when all three of them were on the floor at the same time, that was a pretty cool moment.”

Moreover, she also expressed how relieving it is for Clark and Martin to be selected into the league together, as this way Clark can share her peace of mind as a rookie with Martin wearing the same shoes. She said, “Caitlin has someone she can talk to who gets it − I think she really needs that.”

It’s nothing short of a special bond that Kate Martin and Caitlin Clark share. However, we can be sure that they won’t care much for each other once the game tips off.
