Is Kate Martin's impressive net worth a sign of the growing popularity and profitability of the WNBA?

2024, in WNBA rookie terms, has been mostly about Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Briefly, there have also been Cameron Brink, Nika Muhl, and Kamilla Cardoso. But there is also Kate Martin among the popular names, drafted by this year’s MVP A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces. Friends with Caitlin Clark since their Iowa days, the former Hawkeyes captain is slowly finding her groove in the W. But her rise in the league has also led to the question of how much she really earns.

Part of the 21st class of the “So You Want To Be A Coach” program of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, many would describe Martin as a leader. Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder lauded her, and Martin’s teammates, including CC, praised ‘The Glue’ too. But other than basketball, the Aces rookie has been active on the endorsement front as well.

Drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in the second round, and #18 overall, Kate Martin signed a 4-year, $297,045 contract, per Spotrac. It includes an average annual salary of $74,261 and in her rookie year, she will earn a base salary of $67,249, while also carrying a cap hit of $67,249.

But one unique bonus from her W team bumps up that number. It was revealed in May that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) would be giving $100,000 bonus payments to each Aces player, including the newly drafted Martin. The authority’s president and CEO, Steve Hill, was the mastermind behind this exciting operation, per Sportico. The LVCVA structured the deal like the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements done in college.

Hill reportedly worked with each player’s agent in secret, with the requirement being simple – just play basketball. It did not go against the WNBA’s salary cap because the LVCVA did not orchestrate the sponsorship with the club. And Kate Martin found herself with a salary of $167,249. Before that, her NIL Valuation was at $73k, and she had also partnered with HEYDUDE Shoes, per On3. But her exact net worth remains unconfirmed as of now.

Signed with Excel Sports Management since May 2024, Martin’s endorsements have reportedly included deals with Estela’s Fresh Mex, Mel Foster Co., RAYGUN, and Zimmerman Honda. Additionally, Kate Martin also announced a partnership with American Eagle Outfitters on social media in September.

Kate Martin’s ‘Martini’ shirts become a big hit with fans

A lot of celebrity fanbases opt for special names; Kate Martin’s fans are hilariously but aptly called the ‘Martinis’. The Aces rookie suggested the name when asked after the May 31, 2024 game against the Atlanta Dream. A month later, she worked with Iowa-based T-shirt company RAYGUN to release a “Martini” fan club T-shirt.

In the first half of the 2024 season, Kate Martin had landed in the top 5 of merchandise sales, as reported by ESPN in a July 25 Instagram post. At that time, the rookie ranked at 4 and was even above teammate A’ja Wilson who was in fifth place! The other three were Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Sabrina Ionescu.

Martin was the only non-All-Star whose jersey sales went up to this number, which spoke volumes about her rising popularity in the league. While her minutes on the court have been limited in 2024, Kate Martin’s popularity is only expected to increase, and with that, slowly her net worth!
