How does the WNBA's show of support for Brown, Cloud, and Mitchell reflect on the league's community spirit?

It has not been a kind season for Tiffany Mitchell. Out of commission since July due to an unspecified illness, the Sun player had a good beginning in Connecticut after being traded from the Lynx. But after attending 22 games, Mitchell missed the July 14 game vs. the Mercury for the first time that season. The reason was given as a left hip injury, but then that one absence spelled trouble for the rest of the season. But she has good wishes from players around the league with her.

Celebrating her 30th birthday today September 23, Mitchell is finally opening up on what she went through these last few months. “Overcoming sepsis with 6 abdominal abscess is a miracle,” the Sun player wrote in an Instagram post, sharing a series of pictures and videos from her time in the hospital. And fellow W player Kalani Brown couldn’t help but shower some love in the comments section.

“Happy birthday pookie🥹🥳🫶🏾 Love youuuuu😘 can’t wait to do Tiff Fit with you in the off sznnnn,” the Dallas Wings player wrote. While Tiffany Mitchell didn’t give too many details about her condition, sepsis is considered life-threatening because the immune system responds improperly to an infection. The Sun player fervently thanked her loved ones, including her teammates, for helping her through the difficult time.

Mitchell’s Sun teammate Marina Mabrey commented a simple but powerful red heart emoji, while Phoenix Mercury’s Natasha Cloud wished Mitchell, “Happy birthday truly friend🙏🏽🤍” Meanwhile, Sheryl Swoopes took to X to share, “Life is so much bigger than sports! Sending a big hug to @TiffMitch25 . God has his hands on you sis. So happy you are doing better.🙏🏿❤️🙏🏿”

Toward the end of her Instagram carousel, a few pictures and videos show Mitchell back on the court practicing. While it’s unclear when she will be back in an official capacity, the Connecticut star has a whole team supporting her. She was spotted on the court last week as well, and if Sun HC Stephanie White’s reaction is anything to go by, everyone is hoping for a quick and healthy return.

It was not known until today that Tiffany Mitchell’s injury was of the most serious nature. While fans had been wondering what had become of her, in a Sept. 7 post, a reporter revealed the Sun HC’s reaction to being asked about Mitchell.

Emily Adams wrote on X, “Steph White chokes up a bit asked about Tiffany Mitchell postgame, says it was a surprise that she was here today. “Just thankful … thankful that she’s here with us and we can feed off her energy, that we can love on her. No update on whether she’ll play again this year.”

While it’s unclear when exactly she will return to active play, Mitchell looks ready to conquer the court again. Having averaged 4.9 points on 34.9% shooting in 24 regular season games with the Sun in the early part of the season, Mitchell along with Rachel Banham had been vital for the Connecticut Sun.

“I am entering my 30s full of LIFE, gratitude, and happiness. Ill be be back better than ever! 🤍🫶🏾” Tiffany Mitchell concluded her statement on Instagram. Call it divine timing or fate, but the Sun star’s journey is only just beginning in a sense!
