Did Courtney Williams' turnovers cost the Lynx the game, or is the blame unfairly placed on her?

The New York Liberty have leveled the Championship series (1-1) after a great fight at home. On the other hand, the Minnesota Lynx fans aren’t up to their best. With the visitors losing 80-66, many fans now believe that their guard Courtney Williams is to be blamed. Though Williams scored a decent 15 points with 6 rebounds and 8 assists, she had 5 turnovers in the game. And it is the last five minutes in the fourth quarter that has frustrated the fans.

During the last 5 minutes, Williams lost the ball to Breanna Stewart at one time before making a bad pass that was again intercepted by Stewart. She also missed a 20-foot pull-up jump shot. And with 1:34 minutes left, Leonie Fiebich stole the ball from her, apart from Williams committing a personal foul, when she had to be rotated by Cecilia Zandalasini with 35 seconds left. Thus despite being the team’s second-highest scorer, she had to bear flak from disappointed fans as the Lynx lost Game 2 by an 80-66 margin. And this was particularly unsettling since she was applauded just a few days ago in game 1.

“Courtney Williams lost this game in the final five minutes. Three turnovers were just terrible. Minnesota had a chance to win this game, but those final fives minutes were awful. 1-1 back to Minnesota,” one fan commented.

Interestingly, during Game 1, Williams was one of the best players for her team, hitting 23 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Even during the last 5.5 seconds left in regulation, she had an exceptional 4-point play that had done the trick for the Lynx. During the OT, she scored a three-pointer to help in the proceedings for her team. Therefore, when today she wasn’t able to save Minnesota with somewhat a similar trail in the last five minutes, fans took out their frustration on her.

Fans slam Courtney Williams

In the last game, Williams, Collier, and McBride had hit 23, 21, and 22 points respectively which made them the first trio in the program’s history to have 20+ points in a Finale series. While Williams and Collier had helped each other many times in the process, they couldn’t do this time, thanks to Liberty’s defensive efforts. And this had one follower commenting on her consistency.

“Also this is kinda the Courtney Williams experience she’s not a true point guard she’s a scorer sometimes she’ll be nails and find Collier consistently sometimes she won’t that’s been a theme to Lynx loses or games that could have been loses this season,” another social media user commented.

They gotta lock Courtney Williams in the locker room. All she does is dribble for 20 shots and then puts up a circus shot.,” Another fan was disappointed with Williams. She had missed two pull-up jump shots, and a three-pointer in the fourth quarter after dribbling for long. Hence, the fan wanted Wiliams to not play so many minutes in the game.

Courtney Williams threw up all over herself in that 4th quarter. She on her Dark Knight sh-t, hero to villain lol,” another fan took note of how Williams was proclaimed as a hero after her exceptional Game 1 performance. And now she was being blamed for her poor display after the Game 2 loss.

A crucial turnover from Courtney Williams leads to a Leonie three. That may have just sealed the game. NY leads by 9 with 1:30 left to go.,” One Lynx fan pointed out that Williams lost the ball to Leonie Fiebich with 1:34 minutes left and the latter immediately made a three-pointer, taking the score to 75-66. While Fiebich has been a constant defensive fuel for the Liberty, the German rookie’s offense is a shocker as well. In fact, Sandy Brondello shifted her from off the bench to a starter in the playoffs for her deep threes.

I am once again asking Courtney Williams to pass the ball,” one follower did find a solution to Williams’ poor performance. As per him, she should pass the ball more often instead of dribbling and missing her shots. The Lynx was at the top of the passing game in the entire league during the regular season. However, seems like the same gist to keep moving the ball has been lost somewhere.

Hopefully, the Lynx will go out and introspect about Williams. If she gets enough support, then the Lynx might win the Game 3 and once again take the series lead.
