The New York Liberty, who were often considered the WNBA’s underdogs, are making news with their newly acquired superteam title, giving the Big Apple its best chance at a long-awaited first WNBA championship. The Liberty, although being one of the league’s original teams, has never had championship success in their 26-year existence.
Spanning over 26 seasons there have been teams from 11 different cities that have won championship trophies throughout the WNBA’s history. Celebrations have been heard throughout all four of the continental United States time zones, from coast to coast, from north to south. However, one significant city’s name has been noticeably missing from the winner’s circle in this tale of WNBA victories. In terms of the championship, New York, the city that never sleeps, has indeed dozed off.
However, in a transformative 2022 offseason, the Liberty took a page from the playbooks of basketball icons Kevin Durant and LeBron James. They masterminded a stunning ascend to prominence in the world of women’s basketball by carefully putting together a ‘superteam.’ They built a ‘superteam’ with the additions of basketball greats like Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot and Jonquel Jones, and the return of Sabrina Ionescu ? propelling themselves into the upper echelons of women’s basketball.
Most recently, the key player of the New York Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu admitted to unlocking WNBA’s ‘superteam’ with Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones.
Sabrina Ionescu revealed during a recent episode of ‘Good Morning America’ that it was she who orchestrated the roster makeover. The host asked the team a question many have been dying to ask, “How did it all start? Did someone text someone and say, ‘Hey I want you to come here?'”
Sabrina Ionescu replied,?”Yeah, I did.”
