The WNBA’s 2023 season has reached the semi-final stage following an incredible regular season. Because of the rapid increase in the number of viewers, this season will undoubtedly be the most significant in its 27-year history. The WNBA athletes have reason to be proud as they demonstrated incredible talent, proving they are on par with the NBA. Yesterday’s semi-finals saw an unusual contest as the No. 3 seed startled the No. 2 seed with a star-studded attacking display.

Trash talk is always a part of the game. Breanna Stewart‘s teammate joined Kevin Durant and Trae Young in criticizing the officials following an upset loss.

With a 78-63 victory in Game 1 of the semifinals, the No. 3 seed Connecticut Sun upset the No. 2 seed New York Liberty. The Liberty’s performance was the poorest of the season, according to coach Sandy Brondello. Her team was restricted to 63 points on 33.8% shooting, both being season lows. The Sun became the eighth WNBA team to win a semifinal match by a great margin after being down at halftime.

Jonquel Jones, the 2021 MVP title winner, was extremely disappointed during her post-match interview after her side was defeated by a score of 63 points. When questioned, she said she did her best to maintain her game. It’s worth noting that Jonquel Jones was penalized with four hard fouls during the game. She held referees accountable. “They want the players to be better, the rest got to be better… so they want us to be better, be better refs,” she said. Jonquel Jones joined the club of NBA stars, including Kevin Durant and Trae Young, in roasting the referees.

After the Atlanta Hawks lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in March, Trae Young expressed his discontent with the NBA referees’ performance. In the final five minutes of the game, Jaden McDaniels barely touched Young, causing him to fall to the ground. While Young was charged with acting out, he argued the referees should be held accountable for their mistakes.

Similarly, Kevin Durant is one among many NBA players who have criticized the referees this season. Following an X rant by Durant about receiving technical fouls for minor infractions, supporters launched a mocking campaign against officials. The Brooklyn Nets forward had to clarify things after admitting that “talking loud” was the primary reason for the majority of technical fouls he’d collected this season.
