One of the biggest honors for any athlete is quite possibly representing their home country in the Olympics. Bringing her dreams to life, Satou Sabally is ready to return to the court after missing months due to injury. While she has splendidly surprised everyone in the WNBA, she will be representing the German team in Paris. Surely, selection on the team is a big deal for an injured player. But that’s not all to it. Here is why getting to be in the Paris Olympics means so much to the Dallas Wings star.

Satou Sabally recently appeared on the ‘Podcast P’ with Paul George. When asked about the Olympics, she said, “I still can’t really believe it that I’m going to be at the Olympics because I never really thought that Germany could go that far.” The German Women’s National team has qualified for the Olympics for the very first time which only adds more to this special run.

Comparing it to the US and the WNBA, she added, “It’s not like in America where you have 12 All-Stars on a team. No. We really fought for this so hard. Not to take anything away from other countries but I think we’re really just at such a special time in German history with sports and women’s sports that this means so much more to me than you can imagine.”

Satou Sabally will be joined by her younger sister, Nyara Sabally, who plays for the New York Liberty in the WNBA. She too is going through a great start to the season. Apart from them, Leonie Fiebich and Marie Gülich will be the star powers in the team. While the 2023 Most Improved Player is excited to play for the German team, why has she not played in the WNBA this season?

When will Satou Sabally return to the court?

The player who proudly flaunts her unique ethnic background has been sidelined for quite some time now. While helping Germany qualify for the Olympics, she injured her shoulder. Consequently, she had a surgical procedure in February. She has been in rehab with the Wings’ doctors and has been progressing well. In fact, Greg Bibb, the President of the franchise, told the reporters in April that she should return to the WNBA as well after the Olympic break.

He said, “She’s on schedule with her rehab. We expect Satou to come back around the Olympic break, be ready to compete for Germany in the Olympics. Then see her for sure in a Dallas Wings jersey over the final 15 games of the regular season.” Her return alongside Arike Ogunbowale should certainly bolster the team.

Until we see her back in the Wings uniform, the small forward will surely give her best to her homeland and experience her first Olympics ever. It will be interesting to see if her comeback to her WNBA team will help them keep a losing streak like their current 5-game one at bay and possibly push for another semifinal.
