Caitlin Clark vs. Kahleah Copper—who's the real MVP in this heated WNBA showdown?

Riding on the success of the Olympic gold, Kahleah Copper seemed in no mood to lose to Indiana Fever. The Phoenix Mercury boasts the popular WNBA Big3 — Copper, Diana Taurasi, and Britney Griner. All three were a part of the USA women’s basketball team that secured gold at the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, Fever’s Caitlin Clark is on her run for Rookie of the Year. A minor clash was not something that fans would not have expected, but it seems Clark wanted none of it.

Unfortunately for her, it started with her committing a foul on Kahleah Copper, which got the 4x WNBA star all riled up. But what came from Copper seemed to be an overreaction to the Fever Rookie. “What, it’s just a foul,” she said during the game, as seen from a clip from the game.

Notably, this is not the first instance that a clip featuring the two stars has blown up online. In the last faceoff between the two players, there was an instance when Copper fouled Clark while the WNBA rookie still went for the shot. But the ball, bouncing off from the board, was going towards an unaware Copper until Caitlin Clark deflected it.

From the 4x WNBA All Star POV, the WNBA rookie kinda hit her, and she almost had a verbal exchange with Caitlin, but the other Mercury stars stopped her. However, it seemed later the 4x WNBA All Star came to know that Clark was only trying to help. The players were subsequently seen talking, probably clearing the whole thing out. But this time it’s Clark who has fouled Copper.

This came during the first half of the game when Copper was attempting a layup, but Clark trying to block it made a foul on her. The final outcome, though? Even the 4x WNBA All Star’s 32 points could not prevent Mercury’s defeat in the game. Clark emerged as the lead scorer from the Fever with 29 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds. Well, does this mean that Clark can become the ROTY?

The 22-year-old has already claimed some records to her name even before the ROTY title. Clark recently became the first rookie in the WNBA history to record 450+ points and 200+ assists in her debut season. Apart from this, she is the only WNBA 6th player who has managed to gather these numbers in a single season.

So it’s clear that her claim for the 2024 ROTY award is strong. Yet another strong contender for the title has been Clark’s rival back from her college basketball days — Angel Reese. However, as per Fox Sports’ prediction, Clark is emerging as a favorite for the win with an impressive margin.

As far as the stats are concerned, the Chicago Sky rookie has been impressive as the forward scoring 13.4 points, and 12.0 rebounds per game so far. However, Caitlin Clark’s 17.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game just seem more well-rounded as the Fever guard.
