Was choosing Caitlin Clark's home for the 2025 WNBA All-Star game a huge mistake?

By the time the 2024 WNBA draft No. 1 pick entered the league, everyone knew we were on the cusp of something big. Game after game, she proved the narrative true by giving the WNBA a game-changing economic boost. She urged people, after two decades, to once again fill out arenas up to 94%. The biggest beneficiary has been her team, the Indiana Fever, which leads the league in attendance both away and at home. Even today, her economic influence is continuously placing the league in unprecedented territory.

On August 15th, ESPN’s reporter Alexa Philippou revealed that the next destination for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will be Indianapolis. It seems that the league is returning the favor to the Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark. The city remained a focal point as the home of the Indiana Fever rookie, but the All-Star game would be the cherry on top.

This isn’t the first time Indianapolis has hosted such an event. In fact, the Indiana Pacers’ home city is no stranger to big events like this. They’ve hosted last season’s 2024 NBA All-Star Game and several collegiate events, including Big Ten Championships in Football. The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game isn’t the only attraction in the coming days.

The city will soon host the Men’s Final Four and Women’s Final Four in 2026 and 2028, respectively. As of now, it seems that the event will gather enough attention next season. “No one will step foot in Indianapolis and not know that All-Star is taking place,” Flatow told SportsBusiness Journal.com. And that’s what fans have been speculating about on Reddit since the news came out.

Concerns loom over WNBA All-Star 2025’s next destination

In February earlier this year, the NBA’s best from the Eastern and Western Conference came to Indianapolis to compete in the 73rd All-Star Game. Since the East won by 211-186 and etched themselves into the historical record as the first team to score over 200 points, the night is touted as a standout. However, it wasn’t all perfect. Which is feared to be the case in 2025.

“The NBA just did theirs in Indy, and everyone agreed it was terrible lmao,” wrote a fan on Reddit. It was seemingly due to Indianapolis’ weather that even the biggest stars failed to deliver excitement. But that need not be the case next. “It was in February, and there was a winter storm. The weather will be better in July,” a fan conveyed.

Have an interesting take?

After the conclusion of the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, many returned with utter disappointment. Mainly as LeBron James stood 0-for-3 in three-point shooting, Karl-Anthony Towns gave 4-for-13, Luka Dončić was 1-for-6, and Steph Curry followed up with 4-for-13. All these stars were way below their season averages. Contrastingly, while Indianapolis remained one reason, the lack of defensive intensity was another.

A fan declared “Sabrina vs Steph was the only good thing bc it actually had stakes,” after also bashing NBA media for being elitist and disrespectful to mid-market cities.

However, not everyone was disappointed and worried about the WNBA’s fate. Some even offered some positivity for the upcoming showdown. “Listen, anything north of Phoenix in July is a win,” added a spectator while another wrote, “Hot take: Indianapolis is pretty nice, especially in the summer,” listing all the easy access to hotels, restaurants, and airports.

Sure enough, players and spectators are excited for the upcoming event. Above that, Indianapolis won’t miss an opportunity to work to its fullest to welcome the crowd.
