Can the NY Liberty survive without Sabrina Ionescu, or is their season doomed?

The New York Liberty became the first team to make the playoffs this season. Running a hot streak of 6 straight wins, the 2023 WNBA Finalists will have looked to carry the momentum when they hosted the Dallas Wings on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the 11,455 welcoming the home team after their Olympics break had to witness an unusual sight. One of the instrumental catalysts behind their dominant run, Sabrina Ionescu, was absent from the starting line-up.

The dynamic No.20 is witnessing issues with her neck that has ruled her out of this home fixture. Now, the team management hasn’t really revealed the nature or extent of this predicament. In addition to this, there is no official news on a possible timeline for her return.

According to some sources, Ionescu rested for this encounter is a game-time decision by head coach Sandy Brondello. Evidently, Liberty’s talented No.5 Kayla Thornton has been entrusted to replace Ionescu in the starting 5. She contributed with 5 points eventually while being 2 of 6 from the field and 1 of 3 from beyond the arc. This team is also without the services of Betnijah Laney-Hamilton due to a right foot injury.

This is the first home game for the Liberty after their Olympic break. Their 2-game road trip against the Sparks and back-to-back champions the Las Vegas Aces resulted in commanding victories. Anyhow, Ionescu was seen at the Barclays Center extending some moral support to her team. Just before the game, Ellie the Elephant welcomed the first-time Olympic medalist with a heartwarming gesture. She along with the rest of her teammates was crowned and handed a bouquet by the franchise’s mascot.

Meanwhile, the unavailability of Sabrina Ionescu didn’t seem to affect the hosts by the end of the night.

Have an interesting take?

A game-high 23 points by Sabrina Ionescu was the driving force behind the Liberty’s triumph over the Aces at the Michelob ULTRA Arena. However, the absence of such services provided the opportunity for Breanna Stewart to display her prowess. The reigning WNBA MVP secured her 14th double-double of the season comprising 26 points and 12 rebounds.

In addition to this, she was efficient in 31.81% of her field goals and was 3 of 7 from the 3-point range. Stewart was thoroughly supported by Jonquel Jones (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Courtney Vandersloot (15 points, 11 assists). Further, the game saw a piece of history for Vandersloot as she registered her 11th career points and assist double-double. This is the most by a player in WNBA history against a single opponent.

An eventful yet successful night for the New York Liberty. They face the Wings once again on Thursday and Sabrina’s presence for the same is yet to be updated by the franchise.
