Love does not always have a happy ending. And some stories often end in tragedies. This was the case with the 2021 WNBA draft’s 4th overall pick Kysre Gondrezick. After several ups and downs and long breaks, she has finally announced her return through repeated hints. Seemingly, the Chicago Sky has signed the talented hooper. After a failed rookie year, clearly, Teresa Weatherspoon is eager to give the passionate hooper another chance. And as she makes a comeback on the court, the Chicago fans are wondering if she will also give another chance at seeing someone.

Is there a new person in the life of Kysre Gondrezick?

While it has been two years since the unfortunate incident involving her ex-boyfriend Kevin Porter Jr., seems like Gondrezick is not quite ready to be with someone else. Or at least, not much about her relationship status is known to the world. However, after taking a yearlong break due to her father’s unpredicted demise, unsuccessfully returning to the W as a part of the Sky, and then going through yet another traumatic condition, seems like she is finally ready to be in one place.

And that is a basketball court. Back in December 2023, Kysre Gondrezick shared a peek into one aspect of her life with her Instagram followers. Captioning a post “Back at it!,” the former Fever player showed her skills on the floor. In the video, the 27-year-old hooper is making buckets repeatedly.

Consequently, Angel Reese got to the comments section and said, “Yesss bby!” Seems like what followed next was quite an intervention of fate. So, what does the next chapter for this immaculate baller look like?

“Signed” a second chance for Kysre Gondrezick

On February 8, 2024, the No. 2 announced that she is returning to the big leagues. Evidently, she has yet again signed with Chicago as a part of their training camp. The news is surely a positive sign for a brighter future for the former WVU alum. The WNBA, Chicago Sky, and Gondrezick’s official Instagram accounts shared the news to the basketball world. However, what is more interesting is the fact that the Sky’s No. 5 rookie was always in support of this amazing player. With comments on multiple posts, Angel Reese has been quite an active force in Gondrezick’s life. Now that they are practically on the same team, things are surely looking up for the former lottery pick. And who knows, maybe she will become a permanent part of the team that is anyways looking for young talents to carry the name forward.

But what was the case in her previous attempts that despite being a big name in the college basketball world, she could not capture the essence of the WNBA?

The world of WNBA for 2021 draft’s 4th overall pick

There was a lot that Kysre Gondrezick had to put in to get into the WNBA. Although her father, Grant Gondrezick, was an NBA player and her mother Lisa Harvey was also a national title winner for Louisiana Tech, Kysre did have to work hard to be a lottery pick. Many mock drafts placed her in the third round of their projections. However, she sent huge seismic waves after being in the top 5 of the first round itself. While everything was going quite well for the young talent, as the Fever signed her, everything somehow fell.

The very first trauma of her life was her father’s demise at the age of 57. The reason was not known for his passing, but it definitely left a huge impact on the rookie’s WNBA career. After averaging just 1.9 points spread over 19 games, Indiana started losing hope in their pick. Her last game with the team was on July 11, 2021. Indiana’s local news source IndyStar reported that due to her father’s death, Kysre Gondrezick has been away from basketball. Their source was a tweet that the 5-ft-9 hooper had tweeted in November of the same year. Consequently, in January 2022, the team waived her from the roster.

Later, she joined Chicago Sky for the training camp in 2022. Then, the General Manager and the head coach of Chicago had said, “Kysre is still a developing young player in this league, so we want to give her the chance to show how much she’s developed between year one and year two.” However, she could not make a cut for the final team. As a result, she entered free agency once again. Fast forward to September 2022, when she again went through an alleged physical abuse trauma. However, she later walked back her steps and ensured that her then-boyfriend did not have any hand in the incident. Nevertheless, she did take a break from the hardwood yet again.

Fast forward to this year, she has finally come under a training camp contract with T-spoon’s new Sky. It will be interesting to see how things finally play out for this relentless hooper. There is no denying that Weatherspoon is quite a faithful coach and has earned the respect she has in the league through hard work. The meeting of the two along with the fresh faces of Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso might result in some happy endings.
