DeWanna Bonner, the veteran star of the Indiana Fever, has been a prominent figure in the WNBA for over a decade. The two-time WNBA Champion and six-time All-Star is known for her scoring prowess and leadership on the court. She is very vocal on the court, playing a glue-player role and a leader role at the same time. After ten seasons with the Phoenix Mercury and five seasons with the Connecticut Sun, Bonner joined a young Indiana Fever franchise to revitalize her chances of winning another championship.

But being part of the ‘most followed’ and ‘most talked about’ franchise puts a different spotlight on any player. Bonner also garnered fans’ attention who want to know more about her personal life, particularly her relationship status. Let us dive deep into the same.

DeWanna Bonner Marital status

Born on August 21, 1987, DeWanna Bonner is 37 years old and is not just in a relationship, but engaged to be married. Yes, the guard-forward is soon to be married to fellow WNBA star Alyssa Thomas. The two had been teammates at the Connecticut Sun, partners, and now, fiancées.

Bonner and Thomas’s relationship began during the 2020 WNBA bubble. They were in Bradenton, Florida, when Bonner joined Alyssa Thomas at the Connecticut Sun. From competing against each other on the court, the trash talk quickly changed to sweet tunes as they fell in love.

Their bond deepened over the period, leading to a romantic relationship. One year into the relationship, they let the world know about it on 2021 Valentine’s Day. Still, the couple gave each other time to take a step further. Thomas took the initiative in their relationship as she popped the ‘question’ during the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas. As she got the ‘yes’ from Bonner, the couple once again let their fans know about it.

Sharing the moment with fans through a heartfelt Instagram post, Alyssa captioned simply, “FOREVER.” Just one word with a wholesome meaning to it. Fans were excited and their franchise, the Connecticut Sun, also shouted out to the newly engaged couple with the message “Best. News. Ever. Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner are ENGAGED 💍 ❤️”.

Before her relationship with Thomas, Bonner was married to former WNBA star Candice Dupree. But in 2022, Candice Dupree and DeWanna Bonner got divorced after eight years of marriage. Together, they have twin daughters, Cali and Demi, who are now six years old. The exact reasons for their separation are not publicly detailed.

Since moving from the Phoenix Mercury to the Connecticut Sun, Bonner didn’t want to be in a relationship. “I wasn’t trying to get into another relationship, especially with a teammate, after I’d just come off of one.” Bonner said, “That just was not in my goals or vision at all,” Bonner said. But a year later, after meeting Thomas, they started dating and now and are now engaged.

Though both athletes are deeply in love, they never mixed it up with the profession, as both played a vital role in their franchise’s success so far. In 2025, when Bonner moved to Indiana, Alyssa didn’t hold her back but rather showed support. Upon asking about her feelings on Bonner’s move to Indy, she said, “Her decision was her decision and mine was mine. Either way, we support each other to the fullest.”

But the respect and understanding are mutual. When Thomas was chosen for Team USA to play in the Paris Olympics in 2024, nearly a year after their engagement, Bonner was cool about it. “That’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Bonner told The Associated Press. “And that’s something that is like set in stone on a date, and a wedding can be adjusted. So, this is her time. I want her to have that attention, and we [will] focus on the wedding later.”

But Thomas was not going alone, though. Bonner mentioned that she would be cheering on Thomas and the team from the sidelines. On the fun side, when an All-Star week game was scheduled between Team USA and Team WNBA, the partners became rivals again, and Bonner jokingly mentioned, “Oh, I’m gonna whoop her up. She’s not scoring. She’s not getting a bucket.”

That’s the kind of relationship and bond they shared in their relationship, and it reflected positively on the team also. They really are the heart and soul of this franchise,” said then Sun’s head coach, Stephanie White, told The Associated Press. “You think about not just what they do on a day-to-day basis, but the consistency with which they’ve done it since they’ve been here.”

Now, with different franchises once again, the couple is looking to stay strong, connected, and yet professional in their lives. Their shared commitment to each other and the game has strengthened their bond. As of now, Bonner and Thomas are engaged but have not publicly announced a wedding date. Fans will be waiting early for the wedding bells.
