A’ja Wilson, a powerful forward for the Las Vegas Aces, finished last in one of the most hotly contested MVP races the league has ever seen. When it came down to it, Wilson came up only 13 points short of winning the MVP award, which went to Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty in the end. A panel of 60 expert sportswriters and broadcasters reached the decision, and their votes confirmed Stewart’s victory with a razor-thin margin.

A’ja Wilson, the 2022 WNBA champion had previously won the MVP award in 2020 and 2022. She received 433 points overall and 17 votes for first place. The winner, Breanna Stewart, outscored Wilson by just 4 points, scoring 446. Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun managed to rank second with 439 points, despite receiving more first-place votes (23) than Stewart (20).
Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson’s teammate, Sydney Colson might have foreseen why the ‘deserving’ WNBA champion ruled way above Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas.
Colson said, “It was something crazy. A’ja, Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas all of them are having spectacular seasons.”
Colson continued. “Alyssa Thomas is getting a ton of triple-doubles doing really well for her team. Stewie is being Stewie. But A’ja’s just doing all that she’s doing, she has pretty much higher points, blocks, steals… not assists but like a percentage, everything in like a hundred and something less minutes than the next player and then…. and less field goal attempts, so it’s like very crazy to see what she’s accomplished.”
This season’s performance by A’ja Wilson was truly impressive. She had a shooting percentage of 55.7% and an impressive average of 22.8 points per game. Wilson was not just a scoring machine, but she also excelled in other areas. Wilson, the star player for the Las Vegas Aces, averaged 9.5 rebounds per game and 2.2 shots blocked per game, all of which were career highs. Unfortunately, she didn’t win the coveted award this year.
Meanwhile, fresh off the MVP snub, the WNBA champion went on to set a new record in the league.
