Is Caitlin Clark being unfairly targeted, or does she need to show more respect to her teammates?

WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes often has controversial comments. She does not shy away from sharing her opinion to critique highly regarded players, even Caitlin Clark, who recently was the contender for the ROTY and the epitome of success for the Indiana Fever. Swoopes has been considered biased and downplaying the achievements of bigger names. She recently found herself in a controversy after praising three Indiana Fever players in a podcast over the Fever star rookie’s success this season.

During the Queens of the Court podcast, Swoopes highlighted the efforts and improvements of three Fever players in context to not speaking over Clark’s exceptional games this season, “I was giving credit to Lexi Hall, Aaliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell because seriously, they played exceptional basketball.” Swoopes does not shy away from sharing about Fever’s successes, refusing to give credit to Clark.

Swoopes acknowledged players such as Lexi Hull, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aaliyah Boston, who have been great since their comeback from the Paris Olympics with no reference to Fever’s point guard. Having her faith with these three players, she solidifies her stance in Fever by moving toward the standings with such players.

Following one such player since Athletes Unlimited, Swoopes mentioned, “I’ve seen Lexi Hall play in AU, so I know the kind of player she is.” Swoopes shared her opinion on Hall, who started the season on the bench, has shown significant growth, moving into a more prominent role and her potential on the larger stage. Swoopes also gave credit to Kelsey Mitchell, a player well-known for her leadership qualities and ability to score points. Aaliyah Boston has been another presence in court who is both known for her defensive and offensive prowess.

Referencing her previous podcast statements, she mentions how she received a lot of flak for mentioning these three players whom, “people don’t talk about very much“. Although the controversial statements and not taking the popular Clark vote, she is very sure about the capabilities of other players who have taken the Fever’s ground and the team which has won one after the other games since WNBA’s break during the Olympics.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Caitlin Clark being unfairly targeted, or does she need to show more respect to her teammates?

Have an interesting take?

Despite Clark’s winnings streaks and record-breaking rookie stats, with the highest viewership streaks, she remains one of the unsung heroes in Swoopes statements. Even though the rookie had 29 points and 10 assists in the Fever’s 98-89 victory over the Mercury and 23 points and nine assists in their 92-75 victory over Seattle, she left out Clark.

However, Swoopes comments which WNBA fans have criticized as ‘hate’ towards the Fever rookie, seem to not bother her. Across the social media, fans have cited their opinions and although Swoopes might not want to give Clark credit for her accomplishments and growth this season, the rookie is now keeping the Fever in the running for the playoffs.
