Many believe that the 2024 rookie class consists of elite talent, arguably the best ever. Probably because they have carried their college basketball popularity into the WNBA. However, amidst all the hype surrounding Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink, there is one rookie who is slowly cementing her reputation as a valuable asset. And that is the 3rd overall WNBA draft pick Kamilla Cardoso. After being sidelined from the hardwood due to a shoulder injury, the 2× NCAA champion is now exhibiting her skills on the court soon after her return. So much so, that it has grabbed the attention of her South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley.

The 4× USBWA National Coach of the Year reflected on Cardoso’s basketball journey during an interview. She was also asked about how Cardoso has translated her game so far in the WNBA. “Kamilla’s put the work in. I won’t be surprised when she becomes WNBA MVP of the league. I won’t be surprised,” Staley told WGN News.

Soon after, the 54-year-old provided details to back her claims. She added, “She’s got that kind of skill set. That kind of one-on-one mentality. 6 ft 7 in, agile, got great hands, got great touch around the rim.” In addition to this, Staley also expressed what more Kamilla Cardoso can bring to the table for the Chicago Sky.

The 8× SEC tournament champion conveyed, “I’m excited to see when she expands her game and starts shooting a lot more. She’s probably shot more from the outside than she ever did at South Carolina. So, I’m looking forward to see her develop it (jumper).” Earlier in the interview, Staley also stated how another one of her former students, Indiana Fever’s Aliyah Boston, told her that it was almost impossible to move Cardoso during their recent matchup.

The aforementioned statements reflect the special bond that Staley has with Cardsoso. So much so that the latter considers her as her second mother.

Kamilla Cardoso’s heartwarming admission of Dawn Staley

The 2024 WBCA Defensive Player of the Year revealed how Dawn Staley has impacted her life and her career. Talking to Khristina Williams of NBC Sports Chicago, she said, “She always taught me to just trust the process, just believe in myself. She’s been an amazing coach.”

Cardoso also opened up about how Staley has been taking care of her in the absence of her family. “I’m really thankful to have someone like her in my life. I always say she’s like my second mother, she took care of me while I didn’t have my family.”
