Does Sheryl Swoopes' message to Caitlin Clark show the true spirit of mentorship in sports?

The Caitlin Clark-Sheryl Swoops story has a fresh twist. But this time, instead of the usual controversy we expect, it’s a strangely positive situation. The tale of the conflict began in February when the young basketball sensation scoring in Iowa apparently did not sit well with the veteran. But, if Swoopes’ latest X post is to be believed, all is well between the two!

The WNBA legend who led Houston to four championships from 1997 to 2000 and was named league MVP three times in 2000, 2002, and 2005, posted a few screenshots of when she reached out to Caitlin Clark after what happened in February. “Was having a convo with two Caitlin fans(actually nice ones) and sent this to them regarding me reaching out to CC back in February,” Swoopes wrote.

One of the first texts from the broadcaster reveals, “Hey Caitlin! I wanted to personally reach out to you and say I made a mistake on what year this is for you. Covid year has me all confused…Lol! I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed”

Clark’s supposed response was, “no worries at all I really appreciate you reaching out and there’s no hard feelings. I appreciate all you have done for women’s bball and for inspiring girls like me and building the foundation and platform we have today !” To this Sheryl came up with with more positive comments.

“I really appreciate you and your game. You are taking taking it to a whole new level. Keep being great. Have a blessed night,” Sheryl wrote. Well, it seems like a mutual admiration club here! Sheryl Swoopes had originally in an appearance on the Gil’s Arena podcast in January commented on Clark breaking the NCAA scoring record.

With 3,569 career points, the Fever rookie is the clear leader, surpassing Las Vegas Aces’ Kelsey Plum. But, Swoopes mixed up the years to say this was Clark’s 5th season not 4th, and Plum did it in four. “She’s already had an extra year to break that record. So, is it truly a broken record? I don’t know. I don’t think so. But yeah, that’ll go in the record books. And, I don’t think it should be,” Swoopes had said.

Does Sheryl Swoopes' message to Caitlin Clark show the true spirit of mentorship in sports?

Have an interesting take?

But actually, Clark was in her fourth season at Iowa, with a fifth year allowed to her if she chooses because of the COVID pandemic rule. During the show, Swoopes also mentioned that Clark takes “40 shots a game.” Clark averages 22.7 shots per game. That is three more shots per game than Swoopes averaged (19.2) as a senior at Texas Tech. Interestingly, this was not the first time Swoopes had apologized to Clark for the slip-up, doing so through Angel Reese at first.

“A couple of weeks ago, I reached out to (Reese) and had a really good conversation with Angel over the phone and sent a message to Caitlin. She responded. She and I went back and forth,” Sheryl Swoopes said. “I won’t share what she said, I’ll leave that to her if she wants to share. But I will say, what I said to her was, ‘I made a mistake in saying it was your fifth year when it is your fourth.’” In fact during that February conversation in Gill’s Arena, Swoopes thought WNBA was going to be a tough outing for both Caitlin and Angel.

“Will Caitlin Clark be a good pro? Absolutely. Will Caitlin Clark come into the WNBA and do what she’s doing right now immediately? Absolutely not. Not going to happen,” Swoopes was straight with her thoughts. However, she also declared that they are going to be “helluva WNBA players.” Notably, Swoopes had passed comments about Caitlin’s records in the 2023 season as well.

Last season, Clark set the record for the most points scored in the women’s NCAA Tournament by registering 191 in six games. She got past the mark of 177 set by Swoopes in 1993. “To me, she broke the record, but she did it in six games. I didn’t get that sixth game, so I set the record in five games. So to me, yes, she broke the record, but she did it in six games,” Swoopes had told Pac-12 network host Jordan Robinson last year. Not only Caitlin’s records, but Swoopes had targeted her age as well.

“So people say, ‘dang like he or she is killing them,’ but you have a 25-year-old playing against a 20-year-old. Like, you should be killing them. Because you been doing it a lot longer than they have,” Swoopes had said in February. But just days back, she appeared to be offering a clarification for that. “I made that statement but it wasn’t me saying ‘yeah well Caitlin is 25 playing against 22 year olds,” Swoopes said. Meanwhile, one intriguing twist just added to the apparent feud.

Caitlin Clark caused a ‘breakup’ between Sheryl Swoopes and Nancy Lieberman?

When the Indiana Fever visited the Dallas Wings on Sunday, fans had been looking forward to what Sheryl Swoopes would do next. But, the chance of any drama occurring didn’t happen as the WNBA legend wasn’t in the booth at all! In her place, Nancy Lieberman called the game alongside Ron Thulin, presumably as part of a rotation.

Nevertheless, Sheryl Swoopes’ presence was felt just days before as she gave support to Chicago Sky forward Diamond DeShields. The latter had been having a bad showing vs. the Fever on Friday when she fouled Clark at half-court as the Fever were in transition. So began a flurry of backlash against DeShields, but the WNBA legend swooped in with support.

“[Diamond DeShields] head up kid! Hate will not win!! You are covered and ain’t nothing these evil people can do about that. All love for you!” Sheryl Swoopes said. Whether or not this was an intentional dig at Clark is anyone’s guess. Interestingly after the match, one more verbal war started between Lieberman and Swoopes.

Lieberman appeared in Stephen A. Smith’s show and declared that her relationship with Swoopes is “pretty much done” because of a recent argument about Swoopes’ incorrect statements about Clark. She spelled out details about how it all started.

“I called her as a friend and I said, ‘You can say whatever you want … but you do have to get the statistics right. I mean, facts matter. She got upset with me on the phone, and I was like, ‘Sheryl, I’m not doing anything to hurt you.’ … So, our relationship pretty much is not happening at this point. I tried to talk to her at the Final Four, she didn’t want to talk to me. My life is going to be good or great with or without Sheryl Swoopes in my life. I’d rather have her in it,” Lieberman declared. Swoopes had to respond to this.

In her X post, Swoopes revealed that the disagreement happened over her comment WNBA prospect comment about Caitlin and angel. But she alleged that Lieberman never called her and did it through social media only. “Don’t say you called me to talk about that when you didn’t. You posted that on Twitter and then I responded to you, I texted you, and said ‘Nancy if you have something to say, call me, since we’re supposed to be, quote, friends,” Swoopes had said. Seems like more is still to come in this hot controversy!
