Hardly anyone would argue that this year’s Rookie Of The Year is one of the most talked about things in the WNBA. With the advent of so many young and talented faces into the professional realm, the two rookies who appear to be the frontrunners in this race are Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. While both these phenomenal athletes have their fair share of popular names backing their respective contentions, for WNBA legend Sue Bird, the Indiana No.22 holds the upper hand.

Power couple Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe had a conversation on their popular podcast “A Touch More” recently. And to no one’s surprise, the debate regarding the Rookie Of The Year came up. To which the 4× WNBA champion went on and said, “For Rookie Of The Year, we are in agreement. I have Caitlin”.

Megan Rapinoe then went on to point out the fact that the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer leads the stats chart in many respects. To which Bird responds, “For Rookie Of The Year, I don’t really do like a stat comparison. Yeah it can help. I don’t do the record. I just do the eye test. And for me, she’s Rookie Of The Year.”

As it turns out, this is not the first time that the iconic Seattle Storm No.10 has picked up Clark over Reese. In an earlier interview on Good Game with Sarah Spain, she expressed, “So I’ve never been a fan of mid-season awards, but currently it’s Caitlin Clark”.

But, if we were to have a look at the numbers, who would hold the upper hand?

Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese? Who is the 2024 rookie sensation till now?

Angel Reese has made a compelling case for herself this year. A 6-9 record early in the season did provide a strong start for the Chicago Sky and a whole lot of credit should be given to the 6 ft 3 forward. On top of that, she surpassed Candace Parker’s record by securing 15 consecutive double-doubles.

On the other hand, Clark certainly meant every word when she told Christie Sides, “Hey coach, they woke a monster.” Soon after her Olympic snub, her 12 games produced 18.8 points, and 10.8 assists to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest. In addition to this, the 22-year-old had 8 double-doubles since then went on to become the first rookie in WNBA history to get a triple-double next to her name.

And that was not all. In the final game before the Olympic break, Caitlin Clark set the WNBA single-game assist record with a total of 19 assists against the Dallas Wings.

It’s still mid-season, but the choice is clear for some. However, it is still early days to determine who among these two phenomenal athletes has a one-up.
