Diana Taurasi has been a big name in the WNBA, with astonishing skills and numerous records to her name. However, as all things must come to an end, Diana has bid farewell to the game she has played for nearly her entire life. It marks a bittersweet end to a wonderful career. At 42, Taurasi retires as one of the most accomplished players in women’s basketball history. She made her mark when she stepped on the court at UConn in 2000 and remained a key figure throughout her WNBA career, guiding the Phoenix Mercury to the playoffs in her final season.

Starting from UConn as a college girl, she helped them win three consecutive NCAA champions from 2002 to 2004, making way for her to go to the international stage representing Team USA, where she bagged an Olympic Gold Medal in 2004 Athens. Later that year, Diana became the top overall pick in the WNBA draft for the Phoenix Mercury and the rest it history.
The Guard spent 20 years with Pheonix giving them her all, and in all those years, she became the highest-paid athlete in the WNBA. She had renewed her contract with Mercury in 2023 signing a two-year contract making her worth $469,872, averaging an annual salary of $234,936.

While her estimated career earnings from the WNBA are around $2 million, whereas from 2017 to 2024 she almost earned $1.4 million in total salary. Complementing her WNBA income, Diana also took part in international leagues, where player salaries were generally higher, and very notably in 2015, she was offered $1.5 million from Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg to sit out the WNBA season and compete exclusively overseas.
This single-season salary was approximately 15 times her WNBA earnings at that time. Beyond her on-court earnings, Diana was a star off the field as well partnering with various brands like Nike, Cox Communications, and BodyArmor which was reported to be worth $1.35 million.

A Love Story Built from Basketball
Taurasi is a basketball legend, however, she’s not the only star in the family. Her wife, Penny Taylor, had an incredible career of her own, playing 19 seasons and winning three championships with the Phoenix Mercury. Last year, she earned a well-deserved spot in the WNBA Hall of Fame as well.
They both were teammates on the Phoenix Mercury team from 2004. At the time, Taylor was married to Brazilian volleyball player Rodrigo Rodrigues Gil and It wasn’t until after Taylor retired in 2016 that she and Taurasi started dating and just a year later, in 2017, they tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Phoenix, Arizona.
It was the most amazing and beautiful day of our lives,” Taurasi told People Magazine in 2017. “To be able to share our love with family and close friends meant the world to us.”
The couple has built a beautiful family together with two lovely kids. In March 2018, Taylor and Taurasi welcomed their first child, Leo Michael, and three years later, in October 2021, their family grew with the arrival of their daughter, Isla.

Diana Taurasi’s legacy extends far beyond the records she set on the court. she has cemented herself as one of the greatest to ever play the game. With Taurasi stepping away from the game, there will be a huge impact on basketball for years to come.
